Default My Jaguars

Hi Jaguar Forum members:

I'm looking for constructive advice regarding my two Jags.
Both are posted in the Marketplace and have been listed for a month or so.
After lowering the prices twice, I'm concerned that no one is responding?
Each is an exceptionally clean car and serviced very diligently.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Is it location in So Cal, pricing, colors, mileage?
All comments are gratefully received and are of course non-binding
I have owned Jaguar cars for over 55 years.
Thanks for your advice, Martin

What are you asking? Thought of Bring a Trailer? I watch for fun and would never buy because can't see spending $$$ on a car I have not seen in person. Sometimes buyers get a little crazy and spend too much.

You have one photo for a car listed for $10k+ (the red one).

I second Bring a Trailer (though you will need to look at some previous ads and be engaged daily with answering questions and provide at least 50 good quality photos).

You can see recent prices here: https://bringatrailer.com/jaguar/xk8/?q=jaguar+xk8

As a previous seller on there, and one whose vehicles have always sold for more than average price (I'm not a dealer I just buy stuff, use it, then get tired of it and sell it):

1: Excellent photos. At least 50 and of every known trouble spot (underside, shock towers, etc. If you can remove the wheels and take photos, do it). Interior, etc, etc. Look at the cars that sell for $500k plus...follow their photo model. If you can find a place to take photos that isn't your driveway- do it - especially if there is nice scenery there. You can do all the engine and underside and detailed shots in your garage or whatever, but if you do all the front, rear, side view, half side view, etc shots in a scenic place, that helps sell. Look at my Land Rover Discovery Auction (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...r-discovery-4/). I got $15,400 in 2018 - when the selling price for a Discovery was about $5,000 all day long. Why? Photos, engagement (and the Discovery was well built and rust free).

2: Be engaged. I follow a ton of auctions and the ones where the seller isn't there, daily, answering questions, the price is always lower than expected.

3: Provide documentation - doesn't have to be a service bill, but any receipts you have.

A 45k mile 1998 coupe sold for $12k plus auction fees last September so you're in the right price range - and you could likely get more than your ask if there aren't any problems.

You know they will ask about tensioners, water pump, all the "known" issues so have that in the description.

BaT charges $99 (I think) to list it and it runs for 7 days.

Look at this auction - one of the best, most engaged sellers there was - answered everything, had a compelling story to tell, engaged with all commenters. Got a $24k result. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...r-xk8-coupe-7/

Look at this one (I bought this one): https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...r-xk8-coupe-4/. Seller had an attitude, clearly out of his depth selling on the site - got a stupidly low price for the car (the leaper didn't help). I've been over every inch of this car and there is nothing wrong with it. Should have been a much higher result but the seller copped attitude and wasn't as engaged as the other one I linked.

You don't have to pay a photographer but look at photos and see what works on the site. Use the "portrait" mode to make the car pop when you take photos. Most people -think- their photos are ok. They aren't.

BaT gets a billion listings and they have to choose what to list, so if your intake ad and photos suck they will reject it.

Also the more information and excellent photos you can provide when trying to see if BaT lists it, the higher the reserve they will suggest (though no Reserve auctions do well - but it depends HIGHLY on the seller and the photographs)

Good luck

Many thanks to pcolapacker and Abnmike.
Appreciate the constructive advice.
I'll be working on the suggested data disclosures and presentations, with the ad media as indicated.
Each car is truly exceptional and worthy of a new caring owner.
Regards,
Martin

Very good advice from @AbnMike . They have both reserve and no reserve listings. Don't know if a cost difference and I think they have to approve a reserve price. I myself would be terrified of a no reserve for possibility of only one interested bidder.
The first question will be "have tensioners been done?" If you don't have documentary proof, I'd pop the valve covers and include pictures. That will have a huge impact on the price.
Are those the original rims? Maybe my taste, but those would turn me off. I'm not a chrome guy, too gangsta.
You might have good luck and there will be a bidding war in the last 2 minutes. Don't be scared if bids real low until the last hour. I think frequently buyers end up paying more than they expected because "what is an extra couple hundred bucks?" After several counter bids, it is a lot. I bought three CoPart cars for my LS swap. I always put in a preauction max bid. For the 2011 Camaro SS I used for the engine and tranny it was $6200. Lost 5 or 6 cars by one bid. I don't thiuk BaT lets you set a max bid.
This one went for $3700. Don't be disheartened. See the first pic for a main reason why. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...r-xk8-coupe-4/

BaT resets the countdown clock every bid within the last 2 minutes. There's no sniping on that site - so the last 2 minutes have lasted for over an hour on some auctions.

I bought that car. Stole it. More wrong with the seller than the leaper on the hood. Seller copped attitude, etc and the final price reflected that.

Tensioners were done (seller didn't know and wouldn't pull cam covers). No rust - anywhere. Everything works. Every bolt, including exhaust (which I changed to Adamesh Stage 1/2) came off with a 3/8 ratchet. Seller didn't know if CD player worked. It does. Super clean. Brand new $2500 tires.

While people were paying attention to the bad seller I was reviewing the carfax - lots of detail on services done in there so I took a chance the tensioners had been done- and I was right.

here's what the hood looks like now:

I looked through the listing in detail. Grand Theft Auto, congratulations. Never saw a worse listing on BaT. Terrible pics, boot not vaccumed, and engine dusty.
Was the leaper drilled or just adhesive taped down? Tell about the hood vents.

Oh it was drilled all the way through. I bought an XKR hood off ebay for $600 in the same paint as mine. Since I was polishing the entire car, once stripped, polished correctly, and buffed out it matches perfectly.

The vents are Mina Gallery - they're nice.

I guess drilled is better than adhesive and flying into the windshield at speed. Finding a same color hood was good luck. I was considering buying a totaled XK off CoPart. Only damage was smashed nose. Fenders, radiator, etc. fine. Went to Car-Part.com to see how much one in the same color would cost. None in any color available in the U.S. Guessing that is why insurance totalled.

I agree with Mike that you really need to go overboard with pics.

I did that when I sold my XK8 a few years ago. The ones I took are in this album so you can see how much detail I went into.

Even with all that, BaT turned down the opportunity to sell my XK8. Did not really matter though since I sold it to the very first local guy who came to look at it.

FYI - @mjmindling just had someone on the Jaguar XK8/R 96-06 Enthusiasts North America facebook group ask about XK8 coupes for sale - he is in the San Francisco area - sent him the link to your marketplace ad

SKLIMII,

I bought the estate wagon 10 years ago when I lived in Ohio.
I'm the second owner.
Went to Atlanta to buy the Jag, based on thorough description.
Have never been sorry for the purchase - as advertised.
Recently, after 20,000 miles, rebuilt the transfer case at the dealer to cure seal leaks and like a new car.
Believe shipping should be about 1500.
Hope you pursue this one.
Martin

Im really glad your car was a hidden gem in the face of who could be the worst seller in BaT history. It really wasnt the Leaper or combative seller that bothered me, it was that "cold start" video straight to max RPM. Almost as if he was trying to prove a point? Great buy!!
