Default I have this noise!

Being in contact with the rotating disc and fixed shield, it sets up a terrific metallic scraping noise as if something is about to collapse. Sometimes the stone will get thrown clear, other times it needs the wheel taking off to be able to punch it out.

I thinkI might have this problem! As I was driving back from waitrose today I suddenly got a very loud metalic scraping sound coming from one of my front wheels! I couldn't hear any noise at really low speed though and it seemed to get quieter when turning right! Haven't driven it since or had the chance to see what the problem is ( and it's been peeing with rain all day)

Best to get the wheel off the ground and rotate it. You should be able to hear your scraping sound if it is the offending one. Remove the tire and rotate the hub, it should be apparent where the noise is coming from. You may have worn pads, frozen caliper, stone chip, etc. I had a similar metallic screech from the rear of my Volvo, turned out to be a metal clip had rusted and fallen off my rear parking brake shoe and lodged between the rotor and shield.

I'm shocked at the responses you got.

Your wife drove 50+ miles with the parking brake on?
The brakes would of overheated and smoke all over the place.Shw would of smelled and stopped and called you.

Your fine man, the e-brake has to be pulled very hard and locked to grab good enough to makes some smoke..

I took it out later for a short spin but no sound, so I have three questions:

1. Could the screeching be related to driving with the parking break on?
2. Is this only happening after driving for awhile and the brakes heat up?
3. New front brake pads were put on about three weeks ago. Could this be the problem? I would have thought I'd head the nosie when I drove it if this was the case.

Car is 2006 XK8, 29000 miles. Thanks for any help.
Did you find out what the noise was?
I found out what my noise was. The passenger side front wheel bearing! The wheel is really loose!!
On the plus side, all the bushes look good on both sides :-)

Turns out it was a rotor, so replaced both.

I can tell you this, if I don't spray of the brake dust on the front wheels every couple of days, they squeal.

And as it was pointed out in one of the posts, you really have to pull hard on the parking brake for it to grab. I'm sure she barely lifted it up, so apparently no damage done.

Prince William drove his dad's Aston down The Mall in London for the Royal Wedding with the handbrake on. Your wife is clearly a member of the British Royalty, perhaps even directly in line for the throne. Y'r Highness. Marm.
