Default Need help identifying engine part

Hi guys, I found a crack today on one of the parts that seems to be connected to engine and/or cooling system, can anyone help me to identify the part? I can see oil leaking through it so it cannot be good. I could go through the documentation but that will take me ages and I’m sure one of you know exactly what it is. Thanks in advance.

Good point, however the closeup shows more of a crack itself.

That's the coolant outlet pipe AJ85885, and it had better not be leaking oil. Maybe someone put stopleak or similar in the cooling system.

But don't stop there, the hoses look blown up and the thermostat tower is plastic and should be changed to aluminum. As long as you're in there, change the water pump and check the belt.

Only the 1997 (first MY for North America) had the chrome cap on the thermostat housing. I am impressed it is still on the engine!!!!!!

Thanks a lot RJ, I’ll make sure to check/replace parts you mentioned. I have to investigate that fluid.. I assumed it was oil..

sometimes coolant that collects on a hairline crack (it certainly looks like a crack! gooood catch!) will get thick and viscous like that. almost like glue. i would not guess that to be oil at all. take your finger, touch it to the substance and dab a little on the tip of your tongue and be ready to spit! I bet my foot it tastes sweet,,, concentrated, sweet. as other have said - replace all of that stuff around there. not so expensive at all, and great for peace of mind, especially with the summer months approaching. while at it I would even take a peak at the hoses under the intake that go down and in the "V". not so tough a job either. sometimes what is happening to hose "here" can be indicative of what is happening to hose "there" if the are all about the same age or were changed at or around the same time. and,,, remember those fit in o-rings if they don't come with the outlet coolant pipe. use new ones! cheap cheap.

im interested in knowing why you would need or want to change the water pump because of a hairline crack in a 20+ year old plastic part not even connected to the pump???? might as well change the motor mounts???? while your in there?

I would avoid tasting antifreeze, which is highly toxic, and go right to the antidote, which is whiskey or vodka (really !). You own a Jaguar. Spirits are the only thing that will maintain your sanity. I'd warn don't drink and drive, but you (like me) own a '97 Jaguar so you won't be doing much of that - the driving part anyway !

By way of encouragement not to delay, see marvin.d.miller's post on what happens when it really lets go:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...4/#post1650229

Consider replacing the thermostat tower, hoses etc. 'while you're in there'.

edit: sorry for the echo RJ - should have read the thread more carefully

I can only imagine... It's not too hard a fix. Fix it!

Your hoses look like they are bulging too. When the car is hot they can look ready to pop. Time to replace all that. This motor doesn't tolerate overheating.
