Default New guy looking for some seat advice

Hi folks.

I'm not sure it's good practice to introduce myself with a plea for help but that's the position I'm in.

My newly acquired XK8 has a problem with the driver's seat whereby it won't move backwards & won't tilt.
Is this a common problem? I'd welcome any advice as to the most likely cause of it so I don't have to strip too many parts to find out?

Additionally I'll be doing oil, plugs, filters, etc, a good clean under the bonnet & getting the ATF changed. Are there any hints & tips for either this or general ownership that aren't shown in the FAQ section?

Thanks in advance,

RH

Welcome to the Jaguar forums. When you have a few minutes to spare, please visit the new members area and introduce yourself:

Your problem could be as simple as a blown fuse, which I will not try to locate as my car is LHD. I'm sure someone will be along if you need help with that.
It is very common to have a circuit failure in the seat module. If you use the search function near the top of the forum page you will find many threads on the subject.

Just noticed you have a 2000. Do you know if the secondary chain tensioners have been changed?

Welcome also!

There have been numerous reports of under seat wiring being frayed and blowing fuses caused by the seat movement and less than adequate anchoring. If you do not find a blown fuse try swapping the control module from the passenger seat and see if that fixes the problem. The seat control module does seem to have a much higher failure rate than you would expect . . . or wish.

Welcome to the forum!

Good advice about checking the whether the plastic tensioners have been updated.

If you don't find a fuse, removing the seat to get access to the seat module isn't too difficult. The seats are heavy to take them completely out but most of what you need can probably be done by unbolting and leaning it back.

Procedure from JTIS attached.

Thanks everyone.

The seat removal procedure has step #1 "Move the seat back". If I could then I wouldn't need to...............

I'll start with the fuses & see what happens.

Certainly check the fuse first, but more often than not it is cracked circuit tracks in the seat module. Search the forum for the repair procedure.

Swap seat modules to prove it, as has been suggested. It may be really tight, but hopefully you have enough clearance to get at the 2 bolts that retain the grey module under the seat.

If you break the module cover ( the part with the 2 bolts) upon removal, replacement module covers are available from the dealer for around $5.

It IS possible to remove and switch the seat control modules without removing or unbolting the seats themselves, but it's a bit harder. At least in my car.

Welcome! You'll find lots of great (and knowledgeable) friends here.
