Default New to me and can't get the monitors to clear - RESOLVED

I picked up a 2001 XKR today with 124k. It looks great and but it had a code of P0442. I cleared the code and drove it for over 50 miles and I can't get the any of the monitors to reset. All 5 of the monitors won't clear. However the check engine light isn't on either. I have disconnected the battery and I'm going to leave it over night and see what happens. If anyone has any thought that would be great. By the way i got it for $2000.

Supper clean

No rips or tears very nice

Fantastic, good luck with it.

You could go out to intentionally reset the monitors by doing various things, but you can also just keep driving your 'new' baby, and don't disconnect the battery.

Default Specific drive cycle procedures

Welcome to the Forum. Lovely car and hope you have fun with her/him.

Lots of info on the USA drive cycle to clear your emissions monitors. Here’s a link to one of them where Forum members explain what to do.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...estion-227427/

If I was you, I would inspect the battery and make sure it holds. Any auto shop/garage will do a check for you. Last thing you want is to clear the monitors, battery to drop voltage and then you’re back to square one.

Thanks for the help and the quick reply. I have never had a car that has such a hard time getting ready to smog.

(You mean can't get the monitors to set. You've cleared them.)

Clearing the monitors also blocks many codes being flagged until/unless the monitors set so you sound to be in Catch-22 for now.

Best bet is probably to pay close attention to the drive cycle info and expect some pain.

Or, set about fixing the code you had - a clear is not a fix!

That may be the best-looking $2,000 car I have ever seen. Good luck with it....

Cleared an P0442, came back with an P0443? Could be everything in the list for P0443 below. Was better with the P0442 where the first thing to check is the gas cap.

If the EVAP valve is bad, it's a simple job. But, one problem is that I have found no new replacements that do not require reflashing the ECM to the 2002- configuration. They updated the part with the 2002 model year, new parts are available that work with an updated ECM, but only used/uncertain parts are available for the old part with unmodified ECM.

It is worth checking this hose for cracks. Common failure point.

Oh by the way I'm not new to this site. I have a 1959 XK150 DHC and a 2000 XKR with 61K and this is my 3rd XKR. I have a weakness.

Default EVAP problems

Perfectphoto,

Here's a pic of the EVAP system.

The eminent Rev Sam, has a YouTube video showing access to the valve system in the front left wheel well. Worth a look too.

I'd do the electrical checks first, but if you do need to replace the EVAP valve, I haven't found it necessary to remove the wheel, just turn the wheel in and take the wheel liner out (5 minutes). There is enough room to access behind the wheel.

Also, there is a new tube/filter/mounting necessary that does not come with the valve if you get a new one. Procedure

Part numbers at bottom of the TSB above. You can find the tube at your nearest auto center. This basically feeds another filtered air line into the brake booster box above the wheel well. The filter is installed in that box to one of the bolts.

Default I checked the EVAP

I checked the EVAP and it has power and it is moving air. So I moved to the back to look for bad hoses, so fare I can’t find anything. I might need to take down the charcoal canister and do a move thorough inspection of thing. I will keep you all posted.

So It looks like my evap has been replaced, However the extra filter has not been done on top of the EVAP. Are you saying that filter needs to be put in place in order for the EVAP to function correctly?

If it's the new part, likely the only thing the lack of filter would do is to put potentially dirty air into it. No, the problem will be if your ECM has not been updated, it will not know what to do with the new part.

Is it dealer only to update the ECM? Can you explain more as to why the ECM needs to be updated? I have power to the ECM and it seems to running and moving air. It seems to be a simple on or off part. Thanks for the help, I very much appreciate it.

Again, depends on the part. If it is LJG1515AA (all used at this point), you don't need to do this. If it is LJG1515BB, you do, according to the workshop manual below. No, not necessarily dealer only. In theory, anyone who has IDS can do this, probably independents around you. That said, one of mine did not need this, but I assumed the ECM had been updated when the engine was rebuilt long before I bought it.

From third edition of XK8 workshop manual.

What a bargain for $2k! If you can’t get it sorted out, I’d be happy to take it off your hands for $200 more than you paid

seriously though, best of luck with it!
