Default new toy

I just bought a cheap ( $12) ELM327 on Amazon and downloaded Torque Pro to my phone.

Pretty cool but the dial for coolant temp reads "no data". Is this normal, or just a symptom of Chinese quality control ?

l recall another member having the same problem recently with a bluetooth version but subsequently tried a wi fi elm and there was no issue.
l have both versions and have never had a problem.

My coolant temp shows up ok with my cheap ELM327 using the OliviaDrive app (Android). Have you tried a different app?

It seems to be a very odd Torque bug.

Bought same unit off E-bay and also does not read engine temperature. Unit was shipped from China and from other forum members comments looks like a quality issue. Guess you get what you pay for.

I will try another Android app , but I too suspect that it's just "chinese quality control" It's not like I spent a fortune.

Are you getting any data? It is fundamentally digital, so if you get one, you should get all, from a hardware standpoint.

Are you running TorquePro on Android? Over BlueTooth? Try and make a profile for your car, and force the "ISO 9141" protocol. The car has multiple protocols available, but OBDII is only available over ISO 9141. No need to waste time "finding the ECU" over other protocols like CAN or SCP.

Also, when you add a dial and you choose the data item, the list updates dynamically with live data from the ECU. Check the short term fuel trims, they should change a bit. Check fuel pressure.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I only got the thing yesterday and only messed with it for about 10 minutes. Yes I'm using TorquePro on Android with Bluetooth. I made a profile for the Jag...set up my units ( litres instead of US gal, degrees C instead of F etc.) I get RPM, acceleration, HP etc ... Don't remember anything about an ISO9141 protocol but will check that out. Have not tried to add any dials yet so I have not seen fuel pressure or trims. Thanks for the advice

The thing will read fuel trims but I'm not sure which ones I need to read. There is short term , long term , sensor, sensor 2 etc. I set up short term and long term dials for bank one and bank two and drove around a bit. Bank 2 is always a wee bit higher than bank one. Long term varies between 1.6 and 3.9 and short term jumps around a lot ( I guess that's because it is short term ? ) At idle both generally below 4. Accelerating they drop to almost zero. Driving slowly that are between 4 and 6 but if I let off the gas or go down a small grade they will sometimes blip up to 14. I have no idea if any of this is normal or not.

I found the ISO9141 thing in the car profile AFTER I came back from my drive ...so it was not set for these readings. I'll try again tomorrow

14 is the percentage of fuel to add. Under deceleration, there is high vacuum. I suspect there is an air leak, and it gets way worse under high vacuum. Otherwise, these numbers look good. I suppose it should all be zero, but codes only come up at 25, so anything under 5 is good. I had 15+ for a while (so, no code), but it did not run well.

Putting ISO 9141 in the profile might make startup a bit quicker, but it is clearly working already as you are getting live data.

Have you tried resetting the profile to Fahrenheit? Just to test for a simple software bug in Torque. Unlikely, but worth a try. Again, if you already get all that data, the dongle is working fine...

Barry

The thread linked above relates the exact symptoms you describe. No coolant temp in the Jag using Torue Pro, but it works with my Honda. Temp does work in the Jag using Dash Command software, So just some sort of incompatibility between Torque pro and the Jag using the cheap ELM device that might be solved with a better OBDI reader

Indeed : I downloaded DashCommand and the coolant temp reads just fine....so its a problem with Torque Pro and not the sender. I'll just but DashCommand , it's only $10

Default ELM327 on 2 Jags.

At the urgence of people on this forum my first purchase to go with my 2004 XK8 was an ELM327 and TORQUE PRO. It worked without a hitch and has been invaluable. Last year I bought a 2008 S-Type 4.2 and of course an other ELM327. Niether Elm will work with TorquePro on the S-type but both work just fine with Dash Command. Dash Commands works with both cars.
