Many months have passed on and my Xkr never made it to the roads this season. Now its time to get my SC work done. Problems with the rear end suspension/drivetrain renovation has taken its toll on time available for other things. I took up the work with the SC today from where I left it in April.
Having problems to get the SC off the engine. Should have all bolts off but not sure. Removed the two vertical bolts beneath the snout and the four bolts between intake elbow an SC. The SC now moves a tiny bit when applying a bit of force, but wont come off. Is it possible to get the SC off this way? Or do the intake elbow has to come off together with the SC?
A bit of progress the last few days, got the upper pulley removed from the SC following the instructions from Powerhouse. I purchased the 10% smaller upper pulley from them.
Also removed the right hand side IC. As some of you pointed out earler in this thread there is a layer of soft carbon deposits inside it. What is the recommended procedure to clean it? Using some solvent like gasoline? Or even acid?
The valley hoses look like in good shape but will be renewed, bought new ones in advance
Just came upon this Thread again and found your last entry...While you have the S/C off the Valley and you plan to replace the Heater Hoses this would be a great time to replace the Knock Sensors, if you haven't done this already...
yes that thought appeared in my mind also. What is life expectancy for the knock sensors? Are the one pictured below of original type? Just to figure out if they might have been replaced by former owner
The knock sensors are not a wear part as such and don't have a prescribed life that I know of.
Just based on the number of threads mentioning them, I'd guess they are an infrequent failure point. Zrays recent experience aside, I can't recall a thread about replacing one for many years.
My 2005 XKR has had 2 Sets already and is currently in the Shop getting them replaced again.....I've got 110,000 miles on it now! I'm just to old to do that much work on it anymore....No way I could remove the S/C anymore....
Someone last week was talking about them and was just going to push them in under the S/C....don't remember who it was.....But if you are down to where they are, as it appears.....I would certainly replace them.....and yes they are Denso's....

Many posts that state the 10% pulley over spins the SC and therefore is a waste of money........”
I would have to be convinced of the validity of that assertion. There are several vehicles using the same supercharger as the XKR’s, and most of them are turning the supercharger at higher rpm than Jaguar does. Notably the Ford Lightning Pickup, which is probably the highest volume vehicle using higher boost version of the same supercharger.

Those look original, or at least an OEM replacement.

for what’s its worth, my left hand side knock sensor gave up with159,000 miles on the odometer. The right hand side is still working OK. When I do get around to replacing the LH knock sensor I’ll likely
replace the RH one at the same time.

I for one would love to see that accomplishment ! I won’t say it’s impossible, I just don’t see the path one could use to get in there with the S/C in place.
It did a pretty good job. I didn't stick a boroscope in the intercooler or anything but I was able to did dig up a picture of the inside of the supercharger outlet. You can see a little residual in the corners vs the pretty clean center area. This was ~80k miles when I took it apart and I could pour the oil residue out of the intercoolers. I added a catch can on the part load side after putting it all back together and it is much cleaner now even after 20k more miles. Discolored because of the EGR but no oil residue at all.
You can also see some spots where the paint is removed and the primer exposed. Carb cleaner is pretty aggressive and will leave them blotchy like that all over the painted surfaces.
If you were going to polish them I'd suggest getting them media blasted (walnuts or something soft) to get all the paint and primer out of the welds and tight spots. I didn't but wish I had, there was a lot of clean up to do after polishing.
I've done this twice now! I took both of them to the Radiator Shop and they boiled them out and blew all the Radiator Coolant and Crap out of the Radiator part and the stuff inside the Air Chamber , that's where the Oil collects! The Compressed Air goes into the Pressure Chamber....It was completely clean when it was reinstalled.....Also, I changed the Oil in the Nose Part of the S/C.....I do this Oil change every 12,000 Miles and the S/C does not whine at all.....Care for your S/C and it will take Care of you! Now that you have installed the small Pulley up Top you must realize that it is spinning much faster than before and with me having the Larger Crank Pulley also, it is really Spinning the S/C....Never really thought about the number of Rives, but the Boost Gauge shows as much as 25 Lbs. or more!
Good Luck with all the new Power...Now you need to get a Snow Performance Methanol/Water Cooler to enhance the additional Boost.....and Mr. Higgins.....It Works!!!

i don't think i am high jacking this thread with a few questions pertaining to what i've read...
1) "catch can" will someone tell me of a can that would fit my 4.2 xkr and where it is to be mounted? are they atmospheric vented or sent back to the intake tube ?
2) i am doing the small pulley (from mina gallery) that does not require the snout filing/trimming. i live in dallas so summer heat is a concern. y'all have me thinking to do a meth system for both the heat and (Billy Clyde) to clean pcv oil out of the super charging system/ engine...all mentioned previously.
3) with 77K miles and not knowing the history of prior owner treatment..how much pcv oil is likely built up in the system ?...hence need to teardown and clean?
PLEASE: any and all of your vast knowledge & experience is GREATLY appreciated !
What's happening in Big D? Max, I have never seen a "Catch-Can" nor do I know where one goes.....I do know that my Engine doesn't need one as there is no Oil in the Intake System.....as in those you've seen here in the Forum.....My Snow Methanol/Water Injector flushes all that stuff away......plus giving me some extra HP....
If you would like, you could drive up to Wichita Falls to the Snow Performance/Nitrous Express Plant and get the word from the top guy.....I do not have Nitrous (at this time) but you can never tell about me!!!!
The little Pulley will help your power a little but you will need to change the bottom pulley to a much larger one to get the full effect of it and Im going to shoot it with a little Nitrous on the side.....! There's fun to be had my Friend!
