Ominous low moan

Ominous low moan
All,
2002 XK8 has been a happy camper of late, but I am getting a low moan/rumble under acceleration at between 60-70 mph. I stops above 70 or when I back off accelerator. Perhaps related is a clunk in the rear that has been there forever. When the power train engages (e.g. after coasting) the thunk occurs.
My mechanic (not a Jag guy, but competent) says the rear is fine. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Universal joints! You have 2 on each axle that are often overlooked and not lubricated and will cause a rumbling noise. However, you could also have another problem and I would recommend that you have it checked by a transmission guy you trust if the u-joints are not the problem. The only reason I say this is that I had the same noise but mine was at 45-50mph. Check out my post https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=29038 Good Luck!
