One or two minor electrics issues
Hello all. I have a couple of electrical niggles that I am wanting to get sorted on my 99 XKR Firstly, a long time ago the Sport button would not work. My mechanic at the time was not great with auto electrics, he considered it a "dark art".. fair enough. So he swapped the Sport button over to the working switch unit for the cruise control. Now as I get older I would like them to be switched back to the original position for authenticity and to be able to use the cruise control. I have found a very well recommended local auto electrician but he is busy and can't look into it for 4 weeks. It could be just a relay or fuse. There are switch units on ebay but I don't want to spend £50 if it is not needed. Also the electric wing mirror adjust has stopped working. The LHS works fine but not the drivers side. It suddenly came alive and turned in today but when I tried to turn it out then it would not work. So now I can't see out of my RH wing mirror properly. Any ideas? Thanks, any help is appreciated. PS - I know that the electrics on the early XK's can be a bit temperamental and sometimes sort themselves out on their own. I used to get a "rear bulb fail" message all the time so I took it out and sprayed with electrical contact cleaner and have not had a problem since. I always have it in the garage at night and if I am not going to use it for a couple of weeks I disconnect the neutral on the battery to avoid it running down.Could this be causing the issue? Thanks 👍
The SPORT switch for the W5A580 (722.6) gearbox is COMPLETELY different from the ZF 5HP24 gearbox.
They WILL NOT interchange.
I had that problem on a customer car when I worked at the dealer years ago.
No response from the gearbox when the Sport was 'active' or not.
Some diagnosis and I discovered that someone installed the ZF sport switch into a SuperCharged car.
I replaced the switch and everything worked correctly. (High RPM shifts and 2 speed reverse gears)

S, let's start easy. You can manually adjust mirror without causing damage.
Friend I am very good with electronics, will help if I can but sure do find the description of the mechanic's fix confusing.
Can you please describe what was "swapped?" Are you saying he removed the S button, and the Cc button, plugged cc into the S wire harness? Ask and i will look for you, but my recollection is these buttons connect to completely different wire configurations and connectors. I remember the time I had to take my S switch apart and wondered wtf they had so many pairs into a bloody on off switch.
Please try to comment on that. Aside from that do you know if he desoldered, disconnected or re connected/ reterminated any of the wires that go into either switches plastic connector?
MIRRORS: You jumped from "drivers side" to saying "RHS" just when I had you pictured as a RHD car. Please say are you rhd or lhd?
Do you still have original S switch? Original cc switch? Different years different placements. Did yours come from factory with both cc and s switches in the center console below shifter?
Long shot but is it possible that if we describe how to remove that mounting plate, you'll be able to reposition the 1 switch assemblies, replace the connector and you're golden?
Mirror movement:
1. Do you have memory seats?
Yes: do both mirrors move when different M buttons pressed? Yes? = defective switch.
No: see #2
2. Replacement switch >$100. Are you good with soldering iron? Assembly disassembly of plastic switch?
Its very likely corrroding traces. Good news is I've mapped out and posted a fix on this site that has helped others.
Let us know.
Friend please (please) try to answer each question even if it sounds irrelevant or redundant. It will help us help you.
Just thought of this: may help, may not but can you post photo of cc switch situation?
Thanks,
John

All I do is move the seat back to get out with the right hand button on the side of the seat and move it forward when I get in. There is a little Toggle button on the inside of the door near the front and a small switch, if you push the switch down to the left then the Toggle controls the adjustment of the passenger mirror. If you push the little switch down to the right then the Toggle switch is supposed to control movement of the driver side mirror but not working. Hope this explains.
Thanks so much for your help mate, it is really appreciated 👍 🥰🥰👍

If you use a key FOB transmitter, it is likely set to Memory 1 or Memory 2 positions and will move the seats/column/mirrors to the set positions.
To avoid ANY memory settings locking/unlocking, use the key in the door.
This will not trigger any memory settings to move anything EXCEPT AUTO EXIT seat movement when the door is opened IF the column is set to AUTO.
You need to reset or read up on the MEMORY functions.

Smithy, try watching this video. This is where I learned you can manually adjust the electric mirrors. Works on mine.

the 722.6 is the Mercedes high performance transmission that all the 4.0 L XKR’s came equipped with.
A pretty good and well designed unit by all accounts,
Z.
PS (with only a few minor flaws , connector leaks , etc.)

Thanks for the help mate 😀👍👍👍
PS - John I went on another thread here with a guy that had the same problem. He got advice to take it apart and use electrical contact cleaner and it was all fixed for him. I think it could be just dirt or dust on a contact point as our old Jags do have a certain amount of electrical infidelity that sometimes just sort themselves out on their own accord for no rhyme or reason in my experience. What makes me think that is that the left hand one works fine but the right side adjust is intermittent. I do not have the knowledge or skills to take it apart so I am just going to leave it to the Auto Electrics guy to sort in a few weeks and adjust it manually in the interim as you advised me how to, so really thanks for the advice 😀👍
In respect of the Sport switch issue, I just managed to get a reconditioned one for Auto Reserve for only 16 quid! 😀 Again I am no use with a soldering iron so will leave it to the electrical guy.
Happy days and thanks again John
