Default Operating Temperature

Does anyone know what the normal operating temperature of a 4.0 is? Not what the thermostat setting is but the real temperature. I am thinking it is around 227+/- a few. Is there a chart with this and the ambient temperature for comparison? Is it possible to get the temperature from your car and the ambient temp at the same time from a few of you nice people??? Please?? This would be at full operating temp with the hood closed and only opened to get the temp of the eng. I would like to chart it out.
Thanks!

I have a constant monitor on the thermostat housing which reaches 195'F
in normal operation. Also an audible alarm if the temp goes above 210'F
This system alerted me in time when the plastic waterpump vanes disintegrated.

What is the outside temp when it reaches 195. The other day it was 99 and the car was at 204 and the temp gauge that did not move above normal. It is as worthless as the oil pressure gauge.

Here is a post from a test I have done a couple of years ago, temps are in Celcius:

"with the original thermostat which opens at 84 degrees when everything has reached full operating temp.

For me the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) hovers around the 94/95 degrees and this is with driving above 40 mph and much higher (haven’t tested city driving).

What I noticed before with the Fans, is that yes they do regulate the temperature, but they only start at 97 degrees, and stop when the temp is 5 degrees lower. Next to that, the fans also operate for the AC, so even if the ECT is low, it will already use the fans to cool down the condenser.

With stop and go traffic on the highway (so little airflow) the temp goes quickly to 97, and the fans go on and of regularly for that.

And now for the interesting part, I also had a 77 degrees thermostat, which I put in yesterday to do some measurements whilst commuting to work. There the ECT hovers around 87/88 degrees, and the idiot meter shows perfect temperature ;-).

I have only done reasonable high speed driving, but again here when it was stop and go traffic, the temp went up to 97, when of course the fans kicked in again. Also here I haven’t tested city driving, but noticed that once you are driving again with good airflow the temp would reasonably quick go down to 87/88 again.

So probably even with city driving and the AC on (so the fans are running, and not just when the ECT reaches 97), it might give you a nice lower temp."

All of the above was measured while it was around 20 degrees outside temp.

The average coolant temperature readings don't vary considerably with ambient temperature. Yesterday it was 68 degrees, and was indicating between 194-197. On our best summer days at 85 degrees the coolant temp never gets above 200 whilst driving. When parked it rises above 210 and sounds the alarm.

I like the idea of your external / additional gauge you are using, how did you set it up and where did you get it ?

Attach the sender unit under the hood and fix the probe along the top hose housing and insulate it with pipe wrap.
The receiver can be located in the cabin in a position of your choice without the need for wiring.
There are versions that accept multiple probes that you could use for oil temp/transmission temp etc.

Just don't drive by somebody's house where they're cooking a turkey. The receivers will pick up signals from any transmitter within range.

That was good of you to loan it to him. He has had a real opportunity with that car I certainly hope it helps. Who knows, it may end up being a long term loaner?!@#$%&^ 
