I think they may all be made by the same company. I have had my Chinese mid rise lift for over 10 years, and the only thing I have had to replace is the bowden cable for the safety catch.

I have the arms removed from mine, when I am not using it. I also have a couple of 12 foot long 2"X12" boards on either side to keep the critter kind of centered. It also adds a little height for a normal passenger car to park over it.

If you are open to a little advice, before you start using it, grease the axles on the wheels, and find some way of securing the non-wheeled end down. Depending on the weight distribution, mine liked to walk an inch or two every now and then......Have fun with your new toy......Mike

Can't help you with your decision, but I'm going to follow this thread closely. Thanks for bringing this up and good luck with your eventual setup.

I ended up buying the unit from BH Repairs, it was the most expensive option but they open and test every unit before shipping and they seemed to have good customer service.

I rejected the same cheaper unit from SRJ as they to not test the units when they land from China, you need to add your own hydraulic fluid (another £40 cost) and test on delivery, probably a low chance of failure but a massive PITA if there is a problem. Also they did not respond to questions I sent them via email.

Also rejected the Automotech unit as it has two cross beams which would give more restricted access.

Hope to have delivery by the end of the week.

The delivery guy had a lot of trouble getting it off the lorry as it was wider then the safety rails on the tail lift.

Thankfully he helped me drag it into the garage.

Greased the rollers as suggested.

Manhandled it off the pallet, it is very heavy, 400kg.

And after set up went for a lift.

It still needs final positioning, another 50mm further forwards so I can close the garage door and get it up to full height, another 50cm or so.

So far so good!

I bought myself one of these earlier this year, but mine's red, so must be faster!

Best toy I've bought in years, cost me about £1200 all in delivered. My delivery fella had the same problem, they'd loaded it from the side with a fork lift when collecting, and three of us spent 30minutes trying to maneuver over 400kg of metal out of a gap 2 inches to narrow!

Mine fits in my garage as snuggly as yours does, I used it for my boy's Corsa, my Boxster and then finally put the XKR up on it. I had to shuffle it forward six inches as the Jag is the longest car of the three and the lift had to be just right to avoid the garage door at one end and the cupboard at the other.

I've also used it to completely overhaul/service my motorbike by fitting a wooden platform on the top and using it as a bike lift. Lovely to be working on the bike, and indeed the other cars, with everything up at a decent height with clearance all around.

I did manage to snap the aerial on my lad's corsa roof, keep an eye on the top of anything you lift as it goes up, ceilings can be lower than you think!

The one I bought is very much the same as yours, the joining bar across the middle is one chunky solid one, I've seen some with a bar front and back which must restrict access a bit more.

Heartily recommended!

How would you work under the mid section of the car?

I am able to work on my trans pan, but that is as far as it goes. I can do a trans service, work around the rear end, change the oil, and do about anything else, except remove the trans or exhaust.

If I had the room and ceiling height for a 2 pole I would have gotten one, but for the hobbyist this lift has served me well. I only have a 9' ceiling in my garage, and I would need at least 12' for a 2 pole lift, that I could work under, and use tools like a trans jack, or do exhaust work with ease.

It is still better than being on your back........Mike

Mike,
I just had the transmission out of my XK8 to replace the rear main seal using my Atlas TD6MR. Yes, I had to place the car quite far forward, but it was stable. The arms would not locate under the jack points so I used a 5' 2X6 on each side to spread the load.

I have a MaxJax 2 post lift which allows me to do all work under the car. It lifts a max of 48" which is pretty close to max if you have an 8 to 9' ceiling.

That looks like a great piece of equipment at a reasonable price. If I had seen it when I bought mine I probably would have gone for it.

I looked into that lift too but there is now way for me to get it and both cars into the garage at the same time.

Anyway, I took it up to the second highest height setting yesterday, it is a real tight fit.

I am also going to design an interlock that will prevent the electric garage door opening if the car is above a certain height. I just know that some day it will happen if I don't.

An interlock for the garage door is a good idea. Opening it with the car up will happen

Lift
I have purchased both kinds---scissor and two post. Each one has it's own method of lifting, but both lift to about the same height---roughly about 50 inches, The scissor was an Atlas 6000 (sold) and the Two post is a MaxJack. The main difference is with the scissor you have center problems obstructions, but only if you intend to do Hvy maintenance, eg: transmission work, where in most cases not a probability.
The two post is better in that regard for there is no center problems. But-- as you lift the car, the ram of each Hyd cylinder rises as the lift does, above the height of the lifting post, so you must consider that in your estimates of clearance. Also, The lifting post must be bolted to the concrete floor.
All in all, both are excellent lifts. The other factor on the scissor lift is I had to buy two 12 ft X 2 in thick rough sawed boards to get my Jags high enough to clear the height of the collapsed lift.

have fun---Cheers

Chuck
