Parking aid and gearbox
My rear parking aid beeps almost continuously. So today I turned the ignition on (did not start the engine) and put it in reverse. Silence. I walked around the back of the car and each sensor worked perfectly, only beeping as I would expect. As soon as I turn the engine on the continuous beep starts again (its not the 5 second error beep). Ideas?
Totally unrelated I decided to try using the J gate today. It worked OK until I got the dreaded "Restricted Performance". Luckily switching it off and waiting a few seconds and switch back on did remove the error (although now my engine light is on again). In D I don't have any problems. It feels like 2 and 3 work fine but it does not always go into 4 (4 doesn't illuminate). Is there anything I can adjust? I will read out the codes now. P0706. The switch that detects the movement between D and 4. Makes sense.

So I have been adjusting the cable. I just can't get it all to work together. I can get 3rd to 4th to work but then she does not always go into D from N (works fine if I flick over to 4th and back to D). When I adjust to make N to D work consistently then 3 to 4 does not work. Without the surround it does work OK because there is a little more movement but that doesn't seem like a very nice solution (hacking into the sourround)!
Check to make sure the lever is not BENT.
Sometimes the battery dies and if the car was at an auction, the 'lot-jockies' learned how to FORCE the lever out of PARK and break the lock mechanism/housing.
The lever can be bent slightly and not function properly.
I learned this at the dealer when 'lease-return' cars went through auction while still in manufacturer's warranty.(I repaired MANY)

Spent hours trying to work it out. I don't think it is the selector, that all works nicely. When I go from 3rd to 4th the cable do not push back well, it seems to bind a little. I need to get it on a ramp to look at where the cable attaches to the gearbox to see if it is binding.
Not getting anywhere with the parking sensors either. Work perfectly with the engine off but as soon as the engine is on I get random beeping. Thinking it must be some vibration. Need to get someone behind the car with the engine on in reverse.

Re the selector issue, I have exactly the same issue, I haven't got around to investigating under the car yet but I was assuming that there is too much play in the selector lever at the gearbox end. I guess the bent lever may be a possibility.
