Default Parking sensor faults

So, I bought my 08 XJ8 recently and all was fine upon purchase. Within a day or so the rear parking sensors stopped working. I put it in reverse and listened to pinpoint the failing one. Figured I would take care of it when I returned home. (A few days). By the time I got home the parking sensors had stopped working all together. Front and rear. No clicking. When you reverse or are driving slowly forward the parking sensor switch illuminates red. Indicating that they are off. If you try to turn them it beeps and turns them back off. Should I pull the bumper covers and clean and check contacts or am I looking at a bigger issue?

Have you pressure-washed it?

Yes, but they stopped before that. It's going in to get the front bumper painted. I'm going to have them pull both covers and clean all the sensors.

Does anyone else have any recommendations or should I just start there and see what comes of it after that?

Quick googling pointed me to check sensors' health by the following:

1.Ignition On. (don't start engine)
2.Shift to revers.
3.Go outside and listen to each sensor by applying finger. Alive sensor should make repeated click sound when you touch it. Bad sensor will be silent.

I just found one of my sensor is dead. So easy.

Yeah, I did that at first sign and one was dead. Now they are not working at all. None of them. I guess I will wait till it's back from the body shop and see what they get from a good cleaning.

Sochi2014,

I'm just on my first cup of coffee, so maybe my brain is still foggy, but isn't an important step missing from the above instructions? If you shift the car into reverse, then step outside the car, isn't the car going to be moving backward while you are trying to catch up to it?

In my mind, I'm envisioning a Wile E. Coyote scene from the Roadrunner cartoon....

Don't you need a second person to keep the brake pedal applied so the car doesn't run you over as you bend over to listen to the parking sensors?

What am I missing? :-)

Cheers,

Don

Sorry, I guess my brain really is still foggy!

Cheers,

Haven't had the pull codes yet. I have to get the other car out of the shop before putting this one in the shop. If the cleaning doesn't do it I will have them pull codes for me.
