Default passenger seat belt twisted on the drum

My passenger seatbelt on 2001 xk8 has a twist behind the facia panel and it is twisted on the drum: hard to see but I can feel it. I cannot pull any belt out of the spool. How do I release the catch so I can pull more belt out and untwist it.

fixed without pulling the connector
I found a video showing how to orient the mechanism so that the ball inside releases.
It worked and I pulled the belt out and undid the twist

I have tried many times to find it, but could not.
On our belts there is a ball in a cage at the bottom of the mechanism. The ball only is free in the correct upright mounted position. Even slightly off and it will engage the locking mechanism. Mine got stuck and would not move. I removed the whole mechanism from its mounted position, tapped lightly with hand to get it free. Once free and in vertical position the belt easily came out several feet until the twist was uncovered. I then carefully let it rewind the belt, reinstalled and everything is fine.
