Phone ?

Phone ?
At the bottom left of the controls (below the on/off/volume knob) of my 2002 XK8 is a button showing the symbol of a phone. When pressed a message comes up saying "no phone".
Does this mean that the car came with the capability to use a phone say hands free, etc? If so where did you plug it in etc.?
Or was it on all of the cars whether applicable or not?

That's true baiao but the wiring is present in, I believe, all XKs and some members have hooked up aftermarket hands free kits into the stock system and gotten the radio to recognize the phone. I installed an aftermarket head unit with bluetooth and therefore have not paid much attention to solutions using the factory head unit so I don't know the limitations or installation difficulty but a search of the forums should yield this information.

All cars have the wiring and buttons. The connection is under the console and isn't too hard to make use of, but you will need to splice and/or make your own connection harness.
I added a parrot Bluetooth system to the stock head unit and if you have all the pieces it's easily a weekend sort of job.

The harness and switches are present.
My last 2001 XK8 didn't have a factory phone and I fitted Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth using the Jaguar harness connector.
My current XK8 has factory Bluetooth. If it didn't, there is no way I'd consider a retrofit. Jaguar BT has two major disadvantages:
1. only allowing pairing with a single phone. if you want to use another phone, you have to go through the pairing process each and every time.
2. the range of compatible phones is limited.
The Parrot system allowed multiple pairings to be retained and integrated with the vehicle audio system. Other aftermarket BT systems are similar.

Check Jaguar Bluetooth Connectivity Centre for compatible models and pairing instructions:
Jaguar UK - Bluetooth Connectivity
Jaguar BT in our models is rapidly being left behind by advances in phone technology.

It was a long time ago when I looked into the Jaguar BT module but if you can dig up the installation instructions check the part number for the phone module (the one behind the rear seat).
Not all of them work with the bluetooth module (the bit that goes under the console) and if you would have to update the phone module as well it could turn into an expensive prospect.
Sorry, but I can't seem to find the instructions to post the P/N but I do remember it calling out a specific version.
