Labor at the dealer has become such a significant part of auto repair that anytime a job such as a window on a 10 year old car is undertaken it only makes sense to totally fix it.

The solution if for you to research the repair and do it yourself.

Get inside the door panel and examine the parts and rails yourself. Another owner had similar problems, and when he got into his window, he found a ton of buildup on the rails that kept forcing it to stop. He cleaned them up, re-lubed the appropriate parts, and worked fine after that. You should be able to 'help' the window up once the door is apart and make sure the parts are all still good. Be careful, don't want to tear up the motor though in your 'experimentation'.

I wouldn't be too concerned with hurting any parts in the door. I would be more concerned about hurting yourself. The global open/close on the XK is handled by the drivers door key and switches inside the door and at the latch. if you are fumbling around in there and knock the wrong switch you could initiate a global open/close event whether you want to or not. I have a tech in the shop that needed 30 stitches in his left forearm when the window came down with his arm in the door a couple years ago. The auto down function doesn't have pinch protection like the auto up function does and that motor will keep going down until something gives. Usually the skin is the first to go and if no one else is around to help you get the window back up and your arm out you'll really be screwed. If you're not absolutely sure what you are doing in there please stay out.

Ouch, that sounds like a scene from a movie. Don't u suppose if the battery was disconnected before actually removing parts, one might be able to survive? For testing and observing, you wouldnt' be putting your arm in the door panel..but you should be able to see at what point on the track the hangup is occurring. Mark it, disconnect, and then go in for surgery. Possible?
