Purge Valve
Is it possible that a purge valve could go to working on it's own? Anyone that's been reading my posts may remember that I've had the strong smell of gasoline and a check engine light on. I've settled that it's probably the purge valve. The car set up for four years. Today no gasoline smell but I still have a check engine light. Thanks, Mike....
MDMike,
Probably about a year and a half ago, for several days, the fuel smell coming from the rear of the car was so intense, I could not drive it with the top down. I would have passed out. After some research here on the forum, I surmised that the purge valve was the culprit and went out and purchased a new one from the local Jaguar dealer. Mysteriously, once I bought it (but hadn't yet installed it) the smell disappeared and has not come back in at least 18 months. I still have the purge valve sealed in its box sitting in my garage. Go figure!

Did the "check engine" light go out on it's own? Also I'm a bit confused about the part number for this thing. Anyone have the Jag part number for this puppy for a 2000 XK8. Thanks, Mike

OK, I live a bit "back in the sticks" and finally found a scan tool to read this. I was looking over the teck's shoulder and took down a P-1000 and a P-0455. He reset the codes and I drove the car about 35 miles. Cut the engine about 4 times and topped off the fuel tank. "Check Engine" is still off.
Topping off the tank will inhibit the system test until the level drops back below ~75%, so you've delayed further troubleshooting. The P1000 code indicates that there were one or more monitors not ready. This would constitute a fail for state emissions test.
The P0456 indicates a large leak in the Evap system. Lots of info in the archives

You could order a purge valve (sngbarrett sponsor here offer 10% off and will help you find correct pt#) but you first might want to jackup the back end and check the hoses to the canisters as above link indicates, first it's free.. regardless of miles age and sitting for years is not a friend of rubber.
I'll be replacing my Canister hoses this winter maintenance cycle, dropping rear and redoing bushing / rubber that has deteriorated
