Default question on fuel pump link lead

What is the black rubber "box" on the fuel pump link lead? Is it a radio filter or fuse link or something else? Is it necessary?

I am replacing my fuel pumps. My lead links are not burned up but the insulation is stiff and coming off in one area.

The new delphi pumps I got came with new link leads , but they have no black box. The new links also have the wrong connector but I can repin them into the connector on the ones I have. Not sure of the ramifications of that though as there will be no "black box" if I do that.

Car is a 2001 XKR.

It is an electrical noise filter. Chances are it will only effect AM radio if not installed.

They are LC Noise Reduction Networks to stop brush noise from being heard in the radio. They are not cheap. If possible, I would retain them and repair the insulation with materials that are fuel resistant.
