I am replacing my radiator and was wondering how much trans. fluid is going to be left in the radiator, i.e. how much will I be loosing.
Thanks

Hi Mike, I'm just replacing my Air-Con condenser which means removing the radiator. I figured that if I put the front of the car up on ramps and then undo the top trans fluid joint to let air in any fluid in the rad would then drain back to the transmission through to bottom trans pipe. When I undid the bottom pipe I only got about a spoonful of fluid out (which I caught in a plastic cup and will put back in the top when reassembling) Whether or not this is the right thing to do I can't say but it worked and I've lost no fluid.

I replaced my radiator this year. If you are careful you will only lose about 1/4 cup. Take the top hose off first as it will have the least in the line. I used the tips off some used nitrile gloves to "cap" off the lines and connections.

Use a clean glass jar to capture the fluid from the bottom connection, making sure the connection is clean before you disconnect. It can then be reintroduced (Ok all the purists are cringing here) thru the top connection when you are ready to hook everything back up.

The small amount you lose may not matter, but I decided to be safe. I also felt OK about putting it back in since I will be doing a flush this year.

Mike,

One more thing. If you haven't already bought the radiator, search the forum for a discussion on which model to buy. Turns out the only difference between the OEM-brand for the XK8 and XKR are two brass fittings that step-down the transmission line connections.

The difference in price was ~$300 when I bought mine. A good plumbing supply can get you the brass fittings for less than $30. Nice way to save a few hundred bucks.

I guess I got in a hurry bragging about the low price of my radiator. $186. When I received it I found everything to be great except the fittings. They are the wrong size and Autopartswarehouse swore it was the correct one, exact fit they said. Well that is untrue. Now I have a radiator I can't use and this podunk town I live in has NOTHING in metric. Any ideas?
Thanks

Use this thread. You want to see post #17. It has a link to a site with the adaptor along with specs. Link also has the thread types you need at the plumbers supply.
