HK radio / 6 cd changer

On a trip this week i drove to Charleston SC to see a friend (about 1000 mile round trip).... radio and CD worked great going there, but would NOT work coming back, No buttons worked, on/off did nothing, CD buttons did nothing, and controls on steering did nothing. Made for a loooong trip home in a quite car. Got home and remembered that I had the same problem when I first got the car from PO.... at that time my last resort was to try a cassette tape to see if THAT worked... it did, and after playing a cassette for a few minutes the entire radio system worked fine again... soooo, i tried this again to see if it would fix the radio again...IT DID !! All radio functions work fine again. What would make the radio quite for no reason, and how does inserting a Cassette make it work again?

It's been a while since I had an XK8 with a cassette player but as I recall, inserting a cassette is designed to PLAY immediately thereby effectively bypassing ON/OFF. Perhaps the ON/OFF button has an intermittent fault on the push function but works OK on the rotary function for volume ........
