Rattling noise on suspension
Well I know this maybe a long shot but I'm gonna ask since maybe some of you guys have encountered the same.
I get this rattling noise on the front passenger tire when I go over bumps on the road. I know that the car may have been driven into a ditch on that side cause when I bought it, that specific tire was blown and there was brush scratch marks on the passengers side. I have gotten the front wheel bearings replaced and the rotors resurfaced with the disc brakes replaced.
My mechanic said it may be the ball joints on the control arm. Has anyone encountered the same noise? I was thinking maybe it could be the bushings as well. Any suggestions?

Upper shock mounts are another candidate.
Sway bar bushings tend to rattle on uneven road surfaces at low speeds. The shock bushings will make a tapping sound when you go over something like a speed bump.
These cars have soft bushings and for a 97 they likely all need replaced just for the age even though you don't have that many miles.

Your problem could be a number of things but one of the most common are the shock bushings and the front stabilizer bar bushings. I had replaced the stabilizer bushings on my xk8 eliminating my clunking noise and replaced them and shock bushings on my s-type and the noise went away. The only way to be sure is to is to get it on a lift and then you will see things that may or may not need replacing it all depends on who is looking at it. I will provide a few links from my page for you to look at.

I hope this helps.

Just took a look at my upper shock mount bushings and they are toast! I guess I found what was making the rattling/cluttering noise. I saw in another section of the forums where a member had made his own. Unfortunately Im not as mechincally inclined to do the same. Now, I guess I'll look for the best solution on the internet to replace them. Thanks to all that replied. I guess I got some work to do...
