Default REACH CABLE Seeking trustworthy XK8 mechanic in the Colorado Springs, Co area

Greetings, I set about to replace the reach cable on my '97 XK8. I had read several different posts including one I misread which apparently addressed the issue on an XJ8. I was under the false impression that I could access the reach motor after removing the instrument cluster. I learned the hard way that this was not the case on an XK8. Frankly, I'm uncomfortable removing the steering wheel and airbag and that appears necessary to access hardware to allow lowing of the steering column. I would like to find someone experienced with this endeavor. I have the "cash register" sound but the wheel position is solid and stable so I think the lead-screw nut is still functional and all I need to do is replace the reach cable. The tilt function makes small steps and then sometimes moves smoothly. Perhaps all that system requires is to lubricate the motor linkage while I have access.

Thoughts, comments and suggestions are most welcomed!

Regards, Ken

For issues with the tilt, check this thread: different-tilt-motor-solution-145376. A number of us have performed this mod and consider it a fix.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Great article. I have been pondering repair of the column in my ‘01 XK8. While it worked haphazardly when I bought the car at 45K miles (now at 95K miles), it now has no control and can be pulled out and pushed in with ease. Based on your comment and Fig. 18, I assume the lead screw nut or other mechanical component is toast. I doubt it is worth the time to try and diagnose this and, instead, I should buy a used column and install it. Regardless, your article will be very helpful in the decision process.

I replaced mine a week ago- it can be done with the steering column in place- it is just a bit fiddly to get the cable in the drive part of the column.
