Rear Bumper (Fender?) Removal
Andy,
Some (all ??) UK cars have rear mud flaps which I think must also be removed (along with the small rear plastic liner) before the bumper assembly can be slid backwards. I don't think US cars have mudflaps - no mud in North America !! If you have rear mudflaps, let us know as it isn't obvious how to get them off.
Cheers,
David.

In the UK we have non-energy absorbing bumper brackets which are completely different from the US setup.
The removal procedure is simple enough in theory:
JTIS - XK8 Rear Bumper.pdf
However, after 12 years of UK rain and road salt, the hexagon bolts securing the Bumper Cover to the brass fittings in the plastic Beam are likely to be seized.
It is possible (but awkward) to remove the 3 hexagon bolts (2 arrowed in red in the attached thumbnail) securing the Bumper Bracket to the body with the Rear Bumper in place and remove the whole assembly. The brackets can then usually be separated after a good soak with releasing oil. If not, more drastic measures need to be applied!

I don't see how you can get to the topmost bolt on the bracket when the bumper is in place as there seems to be no access.
I had to cut the bracket in two to separate the bumper from the car when the main bolt was stuck in the brass fitting.

Thanks for the prompt response as usual.
Graham ,thanks for the PDF - most helpful.
David, sorry to disappoint, but I don't have mud flaps fitted and I'm not sure that I've seen them fitted to other XKs.
I have had a look underneath this evening, and I'm pleased to see that the mountings all seem to be in excellent condition and I seem to remember in my history file that the rear bumper mountings and brackets were all replaced by the main dealer about four years ago, so I'm hopeful that it will come off without too much pain!
