Default Rear view mirror fun

My 99 XK8 convertible has the rear view mirror going south, I know how to get it off the windshield but don’t have the guts to try it, even the local Jag dealer laughed and said NO try a glass shop well in the big city of Tampa I have tried 6 shops they all say no we won’t try it. I am at the point of trying to find a custom glass and mirror company to cut a mirror the size of the glass and glue it over the bad glass and be done with it. I hate to break the windshield even though I have insurance. I can live without the self dimming feature. Has anyone ever done this , put another glass mirror over the old one? Dave in Tamp

I was similarly hesitant when I removed mine - one tip I picked up was to spray the sliding part with WD40 and give it time to penetrate before removing. Mine then came off much easier than I expected but do remember to only slide it parallel to the windshield.

GordoCatCar posted this some time back on removing the mirror.

You risk breaking the glass and/or mount on the windscreen trying to dislodge with tapping or bumping.

I use two thin long blade pocket screw drivers to lever the mirror off the mount. Much safer as you can feel the mirror move without using too much force.

I have never broken a windscreen using leverage. I DID break ONE using the 'tapping' method. (never again)
