Default Rear view mirror removal

Have a 1999 XK8 Convert. and need to remove the rear view mirror. Some say push up others say pull down. Need to fix mirror before it leaks.

I use 2 pocket screw drivers to form a VEE and place them in the slots to pull the mirror DOWN.

I replaced DOZENS of mirrors when I worked at the dealer and prying is the safest way to remove/install.

You can use a wood block, mallet or similar but you risk breaking a windscreen (ask me how I know?)

PRY UP to install the mirror.

When you say slots are you talking about after you remove the top cap and to put two small pocket screwdrivers in there in a v and use that to pry down

Best I can remember, you need to grab the base of the mirror and move it down, but parallel to the windshield. It is not on there super tight. Resist any urge to mess with the metal base already bonded to the windshield!

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I was talking to someone at a well known Jaguar supplier about my mirror the other day, and contrary to everything I've ever seen, heard, or read, this guy told me that the mirrors don't leak. I have always laid a couple of towels on my dash and console to keep what I have been told, is a caustic substance that will eventually leak out of the mirror. I will continue to do so until I fix or replace my mirror. What do you guys think?

Maybe later ones don't leak, but the early mirrors (including the one on my 2001) definitely contain alien blood that melts anything it comes into contact with.

I have an aluminium gear lever knob with a stain from my leaking mirror to prove it.

Thanks dibbit. Mine is a 97, 42K miles on it, never driven in the rain, only leaves the garage on nice days. I've still got the window sticker.

Jim, I believe that if your mirror is going to leak, you will have advanced warning. Part of the mirror changes from transparent to translucent. It is like trying to look through oil on water. You'll see it if and when it starts to break down.

Default Did want to chance it.

Took my mirror off on my 99, took it apart, separated the class cleaned off oil and put back together. Looks as good as new, and since I dont drive much at night, I didn't have to spend $400 plus on new one

My mirror had typical liquid separation, sent it to Radar-mirror.com and got it back less than a week looking like new. Cost was $114.00. I know this has been discussed in the past, but I was so happy with the results just bring it up again.

Just as an FYI, I recently replaced my defective mirror with one that includes a backup monitor and wi-fi camera. Easy to install. Came with adapters, and one of them fit the Jag windshield bracket.

The mirror on my 1998 convertible has what appears to be two halos, one small and one large, when looking into the glass. Is this common? I have 35,000 original miles.

Another sign of internal "dragon's blood" fluid failure....

Was expecting that. I am still trying to figure out how to remove the old mirror on my 1998 XK8 roadster without breaking anything. Have read many threads but still uncomfortable. Also must decide on where to get a new mirror. Buying used seems to be risk.

You may want to consider shipping your mirror off for repair. I believe several members here have done that recently. Perhaps one of them will chime in now with contact information for the shops that make these repairs....

I just called Sybesma's yesterday (08-16-19) and the price is $125 complete with return shipping.
They no longer offer 'exchange' mirrors but I never used that option anyway.

My first repair about 15 years ago was well under $100 but the price has increased incrementally over the years.

I'll get the damaged one in the post on Monday so I'll have a spare when I or a customer needs it.
