Default Rear wheel arch rust.....

This has been bubbling for a while and rusty marks have just broken through so finally getting some attention. Car up in the air and bumper released at the support to give access.



Don't you just know it's going to be a lot worse than it looks.



So after a bit of cutting and grinding, I've ended up with this. I could go further but don't care to go there....



I have a pair of inner panels from when I last worked on the rear wings in 2014 so will get that welded in first. An arch repair panel is now on order, hope it doesn't take too long to get here.

Check the drain tube for the fuel filler I never been sure if it empties under the car or into the wing .

It should go down a black pipe and poke down a couple of inches under the car in the middle of the differential/sub-frame assembly. Pour a little water in the filler cavity and you should see it drain out of the pipe. If it doesn't, then I would guess that it is disconnected from the spigot or split and, I agree, could well be a source of moisture inside the rear quarter.

I would also guess that if the rubber flaps on the boot breather (rectangular plastic box right in the bottom of the boot sides) are torn or missing that spray from the rear wheel might get into the same area.

I deleted the flaps 13 years ago as they were the cause of the corrosion back then, a very common issue. I now have a series of vent tubes that prevent any chance if splashing up into that area.

Not much progress today, just welded in a patch, now waiting for the repair panel. Don't expect to see it for a week or so due to the Easter holidays.

It's a shame that your old threads with the excellent repairs you did no longer have the images embedded.

Yes, it's a pity they are all gone, all the old pics were running on a server I used when I was running my old Racediagnostics business, I retired and closed down the business 8 years ago but kept the server limping along till last year when I retired it. I've probably got the pics in a backup somewhere........

The repair panel arrived this afternoon so will get back to this tomorrow.



A skilled body guy would just have fabricated a part to weld in I'm sure, however my body skills are very limited.

I've got one of those exact parts in my shed, for a similar repair to you! Ex-Pressed do good stuff at very reasonable prices.

Here we go, see if you can spot why I ended up with a hell of a headache this afternoon. Three Guinness at the pub this evening and I'm feeling much better.
Cut out a section of the repair part and fetled to fit.

Tacked in place but it was blowing through at the top.

The panels you can get for our cars seem pretty good value to me. They seem pretty good quality.

Edit: quick question when welding on the XK X100 do you unplug the battery, ECU or anything else? Or just start cutting and welding away?

For this I didn't disconnect the battery as I'm earthing the welder very close to the repair area and there are no electronics close. Back to the garage. Some Upol Fantastic.

Sanded, then some dolphin glaze.

And then another coat of epoxy. Should have done a guide coat instead as it showed up lots of areas that still need sanding. Good job I'm in no rush.

Next I de-rusted the internal panel.

Took off the surface rust in 5 minutes.

And today after a bit of sanding with 3000 and polish. Turned out better than expected. I really should have repainted the entire wing but was running low on base coat and clear.
