What's the thoughts of the Jag Techs out there? I'm getting ready for the first oil changeon my2003 XKR.

I am in Florida, the vehicle sits outside, and I only drive it 1-2 times a week. It's a convertible.

It's been 5 months since I bought it and I've only put on 2300 miles.

Do you recommend I go synthetic or regular oil? Any other suggestions on what I may want to get taken care of at the same time? It's pushing 33000 miles.

Anyreason I can't just take itto Valvoline -vs- the dealership? I've used them for well over 10 years with my Fords and have never had any problems.

Just keep the oil changed. That's the biggest concern.

Yes, anyone can do an oil change on these cars. Just make sure they refill with the proper amount.

Of course, if oil prices keep going up, soon the synthetic will be less expensive than oil. I wonder if everyone will want regular oil once it's the most expensive? Hmm.......

 

Ken: Thats an Interesting observation regarding the cost inversion of synthetic and dino lubricants. I hadn't thought of that before....

Well, after 18 months, I'm sure lockgirl has changed her oil by now. Lovin the resurrection guys.

 

My 95 Corvette (now sadly gone) was the first car I owned where Mobil 1 Synthetic was the required oil. In the 14 years I owned the car I had the oil changed religiously every 6 months (about 3,000 miles for me) and I noticed the oil looked as clean at the 6 month mark as when it was freshly installed. Moreover, when checking the oil level it was always at the proper level (never burned or lost any oil). So I am a fan of the synthetics (at least Mobil 1) and was also wondering what type of oil is recommended/required for the XKR.

Synthetic oils were required in some C4 Corvettes for reasons completely unrelated to lubrication. GM had to decide between fitting an oil cooler to deal with temps in one particular area of the engine that ran hot enough to coke 'regular' oil, or not fit an oil cooler and pass ongoing operating costs onto the consumer by specifying synthetic oil. They chose the latter.

Unless the OEM specifies synthetics or the longer change intervals are going to be taken advantage of there's no real reason to use synthetics.

It's EASY!

While dropping your head slowly, bring your hand briskly up to your face. Timing on this is crucial... Fast hands and a slow head = a self slap. Slow hands and a fast head drop = a head but. you need to match the speed perfectly to get the facepalm!

When I first heard of synthetics, it was only the racers and avaiation people that used them previously. That gave them a lot of validation. I switched to Mobil One and installed an accessory oil filter which filtered down to one micron. (1/40,000"). I never changed the oil again. Went 90,000 miles without an oil change only changing the aftermarket element every 6 months and adding a quart. One day I accidentally overheated the engine and ruined the valve seals. I removed the engine, and tore it down for inspection and a fresh up. It was clean as a whistle inside. Threw in a cheap overhaul kit and went some more. I eventually sold that truck, but the engine out lasted the truck. This is why BIG OIL and the auto people do not endorse modifying your engine.

The average engine outlasts the car that it's in anyways- in spite of poor maintenance by the owner. If an engine does die prematurely, it's rarely oil system related.
