Unhappy Remote Fobs Not Working

We have a 1998 XK8 Convertible that sits in the garage most of the time 37600 miles. Battery is kept up to date. Both remote fobs stopped working (Odd that it would be battery at same time but replaced batteries in both) Have read all I can find about issue. Programming mode will enter about 1 out of 15-20 tries light and alarms sounds as it should when it goes into mode however no lights or beeps when trying to enter 5 remote entries. Fobs are clean although I will try and check them at local auto store. My thoughts are issues with the vehicle programming mode. I soft reset by disconnecting battery.. I do not want to hard reset because I have concerns about radio code issues. Ignition key door is freely moving. Out of ideas for now so joined the forum.. Hope for more thoughts. epat

Every once in a while I come across a car that will not accept keyfob configuration.

I use WDS/IDS to 'CLEAR LOST KEYFOB TRANSMITTERS' and that usually gets me going again.

Not common but it has happened and I don't know why.

Default Remote not working

When I tested the remotes they do not have an RF signa. Odd that both failed at the same time and neither will work with ne batteries. Anyone know how to re-energize/program the remote. I don't think the Program sequence of the car can work without receiving an RF from the FOB. I think this explains my problem now to find replacements.... I have to look into WDS/IDS not sure what that is or how todo it.

The RF signal is the most important. Forget the WDS/IDS if there is NO SIGNAL.

Hi Rex
Do you have a name and address for the electronics tech?
I may have to give them a try...

Just got back from Jaguar Dealer.. They wanted 270 to try and pair the remote to the car.. Another 250 to trouble shoot if that did not work! No guarantees. OMG

Just find a certified local electronics or Radio Tech. The schematics are online and the fobs are just a very simple radio transmitter. Local Ham Radio dealer will connect you.

Your radio tech can get the schematics online from the FCC number. Surprised he did not know that.

I tried that ages ago in the hope of getting more detail, but nada:

...unless I missed something.

The guy that did mine just looked at the FCC number, performed a quick search and immediately pulled up the schematic and specs. Do not know where he searched.

I am by no means an expert on this but FWIW, let me just express my thinking. I question if there is a handshake or "wake up" communication between the fob and the vehicle. Could lack of such communication cause the "When I tested the remotes they do not have an RF signa." ? Then, I would check the vehicle's antenna for the fob transmitter (transceiver ??) for possible rubbing, grounding, or other factors that could produce attenuation of the signals. To access my antenna (02 conv) , the passenger side rear seat side panel has to be removed. It would not cost anything to pull that cover and just take a look.
