Default Removed GPS for Garmin DriveSmart 55

I did a test fit and a short check ride on this. I still have to run the wire down to an OBD2 power cable (behind the dash) and put in some speaker wire over the two side holes. Note: A 5.0 inch Garmin is too small and a 6 inch Garmin is too large. I already had a DriveSmart 66 and it did not fit. Thanks Dibbit for the idea. I work at Garmin and was looking to make this switch.

No need to disturb OBD harness for power source? An earlier post (see Post #2) suggests just connecting to one of the existing Navi harness plugs (or did you decide not to go down that path?):

I am not technically able to make the wiring that you are talking about. I would love to be able to, but its not feasible for me. I'm going to run the Garmin USB plug behind the dash down to the OBD2 plug from Garmin.

That’s understandable, just curious if there was some deeper issue. BTW, your dash’s wood grain looks absolutely fantastic!

It's certainly easy enough to run a cable down to where the OBD port is, but the 12v supply in that port is permanently on, so you will have to turn the Garmin on and off manually with the button on the back which you won't be able to get to with the Garmin mounted in your dashboard.

You could add your own USB supply from the ignition switched 12V wire in the OEM harness, using something like this:-

Amazon Amazon

Posi-Taps are an easy way to add a connection to the harness without soldering.

In my weekend testing, using the Garmin USB cord run down behind the dash down to the Garmin OBD2 port turns it on when I turn the ignition and turns it off. I agree that if it didn't do it, it would be a pain to figure out how to turn it on and off. My OBD 2 port is powering my Garmin DashCam and my DriveSmart. First photo is where I ran the wire behind the dash gauges (i had a light out so I took it out to replace it). Second and Third show final product.

The Garmin OBD2 port can turn itself off after 10 minutes. I will check out that PosiTap. Is that how you wired yours? I am curious which portions of the switch I would wire it to.

That's interesting that the Garmin adapter works out if the ignition is on or off - no need to hard wire the supply in that case.

When I did mine, I dismantled the OEM sat nav and desoldered the original connectors and used those, so it just plugs straight into the harness.
