I have begun removing my intake manifold to replace the valley hoses, etc. I've already run into a sticking spot. I have removed all the connector and the eight bolts from the manifold. And I removed the throttle body. But I cannot figure out how to remove the vacuum line fitting (circled) on the TB elbow. It seems to want to simply pull out, but I am afraid of breaking it if there is a technique I don't know about. Is that the line for the cruise? Given how "loose" it is, I wonder how it holds a vacuum.
Also, there is a fair amount of crud in the bottom of the elbow and the back of the throttle plate. What's the best way to clean these?
This looks like the line to the brake booster. There is a funky black plastic collar of some sort that holds the plastic line in place in that brass fitting. There is an o-ring involved too. Start by gently pulling on it, the plastic collar should show up and you can remove it. Maybe a bit of wd40 can help. Expect this is all going to disintegrate on contact and you will need a replacement. It is unfortunately not listed for our cars, but the proper fitting is available from Jaguar anyway.
For the crud, this is exhaust residue from the EGR valve. Get some carb cleaner and a whatever brush you are comfortable using.
Thanks. Okay, I got the brake booster fitting out without breaking it. I assume the water valve stays on the elbow which remains attached to the manifold. Correct? I am having a heck of a time trying to take out the bolts holding the EGR pipe to the elbow. My socket keeps slipping off and I am afraid of rounding the bolt head. Guess I'll need to buy a #10 box-end wrench, which I surprisingly don't have.
Can someone tell me where the bolts that connect the TB elbow to the engine are located? Are they visible? I can see this is going to be a PITA job, for sure.
That shows where the TB elbow attaches to the manifold. My understanding is the elbow remains attached to the intake when it is removed but has two bolts holding it onto a plate attached to the head. Those are what I can't find so I can't get the manifold off yet. (I did get new front and rear gaskets to play it safe.)
I just had my intake manifold off. I had completely unplugged the wiring harness down the righthand side of the motor so I could fold in back on the windshield. This allowed me to remove the intake manifold and TB as one unit. Getting the harness disconnected and reconnected down around the alternator is a bit of a PITA though..... removing the upper bolt from the alternator and rotating toward the fenderwell helps. Getting the harness out of the way makes it easier to get to the 2 bolts that hold the TB to the valley pan.
Thanks, but surprisingly I found the 4.2 does not have bolts holding the TB elbow to the engine. Now that I've got the EGR pipe disconnected, the manifold is loose and ready to come off. I was wondering why the Jaguar Workshop Manual for the 4.2 appeared to skip mention of removing those bolts. My car also doesn't have heat shield for the EGR pipe.
