replacement ignition key
Help! I am the new owner of a 2004 xkr that came with only one key and one fob. I have search the threads on how to obtain another key from other than a dealer but it is not clear to me if people who have had the same problem were successful in obtaining a spare key and having the "transponder" or chip programmed to actual be able to start the car. I'd appreciate any suggestions or help since my nearest dealer is 50 miles away!
Alan, welcome. The nearest dealer is probably up in the Morristown area (can't recall the specific township name right now). Though if you noticed they're building one in Princeton right now.
Looks like I live within 10 miles of you.
I've been through 5 or 6 years of xk8 maintenance and still smiling. Thank God for the folks here at this forum.
I'll send you a PM to introduce myself.
BTW is your key Green or Black? The Green one is the valet key - will not open trunk or glove box.
Please let us know if you don't know what exactly "valet" means here. It'll save you a headache.

Alan, my situation was similar. My 2003 XK8 came a Black key and remote only. After research, I ordered a 2nd key (Black) from a vendor in K. C. by code read from instructions in this forum, then had the local dealer ( Hsv. Al) program it to my car. Key from K.C. was $45 and dealer code was $125. You can ck your FOB and get the FCC # and order from a E Bay vendor for that portion. Some have found a locksmith that can handle entire job. Good Luck
Just FYI, The key is not configured!!!! The car is configured to accept the key.
At the start of the key transponder menu you will see the following...
All keys need to be present during configuration. All keys not present will be deleted. Do you wish to continue?
Make sure you have ALL the keys with you.
I don't know how many times I had to disappoint a customer because a key was at home or with another family member.

Bob,
Thank you! That is the perfect explanation for us novice Jaguar owners! The car is programmed to the keys! Now it is clear to me.
Thanks again!

I have a spare transponder, and reprogrammed it to my car, only to find that the original transponder no longer works with the car. Had to reprogram the original, and now the spare does not work. Do you have to hold down the buttons on both transponders at the same time while programming to keep code in both?
I had gotten a spare key from my local dealer. Total cost of approx. $500. Would like to find local programmer, as I now need a spare key for current XK8.

yes. I go that. I can get the FOB on line and program that in the car. The ignition key is another matter. Thanks to your post I now understand that the car has to be programmed to the key(s) transpnder. Thanks again you really cleared htis up for me.

I'm quoting your two critical messages in BOLD RED because so many posters miss the point about KEYS and FOBS (REMOTES).
In addition, FOB programming is a DIY procedure easily done by an owner without any specialist equipment but KEY programming is a Dealer (or Independent with equivalent diagnostics) procedure.

You can buy the software and cable to program the car from British Diagnostics (84 British pounds, about $110US, plus shipping), and probably other vendors, for less than most dealers will charge to program for one key.
