Question Replacement of xenon headlamp ballast.

Changed my dip bulb & it didn't see to fix the problem, so I assume it's the ballast.

Does anyone know if this is suitable? https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/va...890030967.html It say about possible computer coding. Is That something we have worry about? will this work Or do I have to pay a lot ££££ more for one ?

The Bulb is a D1S. Auto levelling.
Even though it is registered as 2002. It does appear that some of the specs are of a 2003.
Do I have this wrong?

I thought it was too early for HID with ballast and levelling and would be Halogen with headlamp levelling but the 12V 35W D1s35W is the correct low beam bulb for HID.

You can use that ballast. I have also used an aftermarket ballast. It will work fine, however, there is a possibility that you lose the auto-leveling function. It won't really be much of a problem for you but oncoming traffic could get briefly glared when you take large humps on the road.

What problems are you having with your headlights?

The dip headlight stopped working, so I replaced the bulb & it still didnt work. So I have assumed that it is the ballast.

Just make sure that any ballast that you buy has the auto headlamp levelling circuitry as HID headlamp levelling is part of the MOT test in the UK.

Yes definitely. I was wondering if the part I listed did that. https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/va...890030967.html It says that they will work with 2 wires out of the 12 pin.
They are a lot cheaper than others I've seen. I wouldn't even know where to start if they have to be programmed, or if indeed they are capable.

Braveheart,

It sounds like you need to buy a couple new 12 pin Valeo Ballast (LAD5G89031486) This is the same as what I have on my 2005 XKR... Then buy a couple new Bulbs. I believe they are D1S 35W 6000K. You can buy the Bulbs from Amazon as they have some really great Bulbs (Cheap)..The 6000K means the the brightness of the Bulb is as white as it will get before turning Blue.....This is my set-up!

Well that is a UK seller so one would hope that their ballast would provide auto levelling, best to ask them to confirm and also if they accept returns if levelling doesn't work.
The ballast does not require any programming on an XK8/XKR just plug in and go.

Personally I would buy a genuine Valeo LAD5G like here for £130 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Valeo-LAD...t/152216068683

I had found this genuine one. https://www.berkshirejagcomponents.c...k8-c2x18743806 but on contacting the company, they say it doesn't have the auto levelling feature.
How do I know how to distinguish between ones that incorporate the self levelling and the ones that don't? I'd rather get the right one & fit once.

Strange that a UK supplier would be selling parts that are not street legal + very overpriced anyway. Have noticed high prices from this company before. Dealt with them once never again.
You are looking for a Valeo one with the part no. 73160057L stamped into the connector side metalwork of the case. See Pic

Did you check the £130 one I linked to earlier in post #11 ?

Silly question but did you check the fuse box because there’s a separate relay for the left and the right bulb and when I got my car which is an S type one headlight was out and I didn’t know that there was two separate relays. Lucky for me it was the bulb that was out because that’s what I replaced first but I had other problems where the bulb had overheated the socket which is an igniter which also needed to be changed

I did check out the one you said. That does seem a lot more reasonable. I didn't order one because I was concerned that it didn't do the auto levelling, so I sent the seller a message. I haven't heard back yet.
Your further information on looking out for the stamped number is really helpful. Thanks for that.

I did check the fuses. I checked 4 of them to be sure. (6;8;19 & 21) if I remember correctly. I didn't check the relay though, but unless I'm mistaken, there is only one relay for dipped beam.
So both lights would be out.
If anyone knows better, please correct me.
I haven't checked the igniter.

Yes correct only one relay to feed LH & RH.

Basic circuit for the 12 pin ballast to show connections if that is any help - LH & RH are the same.
