Replacing shocks on a 2001 Jaguar XKR
#2
I'm not sure that the springs are even available?
Unless your car has extremely high mileage I don't think new springs will be necessary, but new shocks should make a huge difference, and best advice is to go with OEM Bilsteins, they can be found for around $100 each.
Ah, just noticed you are asking about an XKR, not an XJR series, Not sure that the same applies, you might try the XKR/XK8 section of the forum

In my experience, the springs are far less likely to wear out than shocks are going to. I have yet to ever replace springs on a car without doing so for the intent of lowering or changing something. My current XJR is on stock springs, and rides just fine even after replacing shocks. It's not to say that you can't, and if you find a good deal and want to, by all means, but you shouldn't need to.

I've moved your post to the more appropriate model section - XK8/XKR (X100) for better visibility and response.

As already pointed out, unless recently changed, you have to replace the upper shock mounts. The factory part is poorly made, the rubber foam crumbles and the front end sags, leaving the car out of alignment. The only seemingly trusted after market part is from Welsh Enterprise in Ohio. Others have been shown to literally melt over a short period of time. Some have done, and then redone the work a few years later with the same (poorly made) factory part.
To your question, old springs can sag and not allow the car to reach proper ride height, but this is pretty rare. On top of this, there are many part number for springs, many no-longer-available. This ride height is pretty much the only parameter that drives camber, but is, again, largely controlled by the upper mount.
Do you have the electrically controlled suspension or the conventional version? The lower bushing is available separately for these shocks and makes sense as a replacement for the expensive adjustable shocks if that is the main problem.
Best of luck, keep us posted.
PS: Check the Vehicle Spec Book on jagrepair.com for actual numbers for ride height.
