I went to top up the coolant in my 2001 Jag X-Type Sport.. The cap unscrewed and I notice a yellow stopper blocking the hole. The only way to get it out was to lever it up and when I did it was spring loaded and the spring went in the engine compartment. The rest was a metal coin shaped cap with a retractable button in the middle. No problem I noted the part number and got a replacement. The problem is that the new part sits too proud of the tank and you cannot thread it back on. and looks nothing like the items I replaced. I took the car in 2 years ago for a pressure test is the yellow stopper something the garage has left behind. The mystery is why the new cap does not fit. Anyone out there that can explain this? Cheers.
The cap should simply unscrew to leave an open filler neck in the Expansion Tank......

Graham, That is the part I ordered that does not fit. The cap I removed is just a cap with no part that fits into the expansion tank. As mentioned I have a yellow stopper that is in the hole and a coin shaped part that fits underneath the cap. Tesauc
I've scoured the intertnet for a photo of a tank without the cap. Here's what you should see:
It sounds like there's a piece of pressure test kit left inside yours.

Graham, It is the only explanation that makes sense. As mentioned I took it in for pressure test previously and they maybe left the parts behind. The only problem is when I ordered a new one using the part number it did not fit as it was too long. I am losing coolant every trip so I probably have to take it into the garage in the new year to find out why. As you know it could be simple leaking hose or terminal a leaking head casket. A simple solution is to get a new tank with a cap on it and have the existing one replaced or find a cap that is shorter that fits. Thanks for your help.
Graham, Yes it makes sense and at least I will know the cap will fit! It is is plain sight and looks an easy job to replace but I think I will let a garage do it as at least I can blame them if it goes wrong afterwards. Thanks
It is an easy job BUT you would have to partially drain and then refill the cooling system.
If you have a garage do the work, tt shouldn't be more than one hour labour plus cost of coolant.
If I was doing the work, I'd drain the coolant and refill the system with 50/50 mixture of coolant/distilled water so it was done for the next five years.
