Default Rocker noise has me worried

My car began a rattle noise when starting. Sometime after I began hearing the noise on idle. It disappears when I accelerate. A friend of mine stated it was the rocker rattling and it may be under warranty. We checked the passport service warranty book and couldn't find the warranty on the engine. Any help would be useful?

Welcome to the forum Stephen, I've moved your post to a new thread.
You should think about posting in the new members section New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

To get any help you are going to have to give some more details, model (XK8/R I assume.) year, mileage any history you have etc.

Norri correct you need to post the year, it could be a timing chain tensioner and if not addressed immediately it could be catastrophic.

If you have an XK8, your friend is mistaken. There are no "rocker" arms in your engine.

Sounds like the dreaded "tensioner death rattle."

Fix it soon or risk trashing the entire engine. You could be one valve cam tooth away from destruction.

As was mentioned above, please let us know your model and year so we can help you better.

Jaguars marketed in the US have a four year warranty under Passport to Service. Extended Warranty is outside the scope of this.

What model and year do you have?

Well with that year it shouldn't be a tensioner problem, but there is always a first time.
Does anyone know of tensioner failure on the 4.2?
There is no VVT on an XKR, so that is eliminated.

What is your mileage?
Do you know the service history?

Welcome to the world of knocks. I have a knock at low rpm's with the engine cold. It only lasts a few min. and is most notable in gear. Let us know what you figure out. Check out the two video's. One is my cold knock and the other was my cam chain tensioner.

Default Are you kiddin me?

The video was right on, that second video is my car. That timing chain video! How involved is the repair on it? I took my Jag after I first got it to a import place in downtown Columbus, they never fixed anything right so I started taking to a Jag dealer in Atlanta, expensive yes, but done right! If this is a simple deal I my try a different import place if more involved I might try a Mercedes dealer......or aren't these a hybrid ford engine ?

The 4.2 V8 is a Jaguar designed engine, not a Ford engine, even though Jaguar was under Ford ownership at the time.

Tensioner problems are rare on the 4.2 that you have, but were common on the earlier 4.0. It certainly does not need to be a dealer, but you should go to someone with experience on late model Jaguars.

Default Experience with Jaaaag

Well, that's always the question. I don't trust the sports and imports guy here, I let him hear it, he said it sounded like a 5k job, the engine was bad. I said really...... And drove off. There is a small foreign car shop close to my office that works on a lot of late model foreign cars so I figured I'd try him, will I hurt my engine by driving it to the shop though?

I did mine myself for about $200 in parts. It's not a hard swap if you have the time and tools. Most indys charge $800 or so.

If it is your tensioners, every time you drive it you risk trashing the eingine, which on your car would be $5-10K to install a new one. If it jumps two teeth and your valves hit your pistons, oh my!

I wouldn't drive it until you get it fixed, unless you are feeling very lucky. In that case, drive it to the store and buy a lottery ticket too. lol!

Default Ordering parts

I'm assuming I'm ordering a chain or belt. I use Coventry west for parts, they've been incredible in the past. Is that all I need to order, thus way it's not setting in the shop waiting on someone else to tear it apart confirm the part an then order while she sits in pieces in their shop.

OMG +1. Your car needs to be diagnosed first!

+2 I don't think anyone has reported a tensioner failure on a 4.2 (not to say it can't happen) you need to have it checked out.

Please do!

No metal tensioner has, to my knowledge, been reported to have failed either as OEM or replacement in an earlier plastic tensioner engine.

Luckily this noise is hidden in the confines of my home garage. I quickly drive off as it comes out of the garage so the neighbor won't hear it. It's very embarrassing! I'm going to a three day Ferrari rally this weekend and may have to get up early to warm up the car before the Ferrari guys are out in the parking lot and hear it start cold.

I would pay $100 to someone who could figure it out. Like I said before, even the Jag dealer with $$ in their eyes had no ideas.
