Default Roof (Hood) 2005 xk8

Out and about in 2005 xk8 got home to bring top up and nothing, no noise or nothing. Noticed the latch did not rise( I've notice from past that this is the first thing that happens when you push the roof up button. Checked the 40a fuse, blown. Replaced and tried again , blown. Did some research and look at the two side back motor fuses and they are good. Opps forgot to mention dash told me "hood not latched". Read up and decided to open latch manually with Allen wrench , I did open hydroelectric value first, manually raised and closed roof, locked latch with Allen wrench. Replaced 40a fuse, started car, no longer message of latch, tried to continue to close roof by using button, hydraulic valve closed. When enguagined roof up button side windows went down? Confused that windows went down when pushing roof up, can't remember if that is correct? back windows never came up. Checked 40a fuse blown again. Did noticed back windows did for an Instant started then nothing.

224 Views but 0 Replies as I write this post.

We have a lot of convertible owning members so it's not lack of knowledge or expertise.

I had to read that block of text several times to work out what was happening and what you are asking. Line breaks and a list of what you have observed/done so far would make it a lot easier to understand.

This is an unusual one. I for one would have thought raising and lowering manually may have solved the problem if it was a stuck frame etc.

I know this sounds daft but try resetting your windows. Ignition on. Windows down and hold till you hear a faint click. Raise again till you hear a faint click.

It really does sound like a jam of sorts that makes the fuses blow as a precaution. Hence the resetting the windows suggestion. Either that or a short somewhere on the circuit.

I assume your hydraulic fluid levels are ok in the tank?

The only other thing I can think of is somehow the hood is out of sequence to what the car is asking it to do. i.e it thinks its up when its down etc. If that were the case a battery reset may help.

Thats about the only things I can think of for now.

Good luck, and let us know if you cure it.

Just had another thought! I get them sometimes.

Find out what other things those fuses run. It may have nothing to do with the hood at all. It could be another component on the car thats blowing the fuses.

Agree that system is out of sync., but the blown fuse is troubling. Exactly which fuse is it that is blowing?

After the hard reset, and replacing the fuse again, with the roof up and latched, all windows closed and front windows reset.

Try just lowering the rear windows by pressing the roof down button only long enough for the rear windows to go down, if this works then that eliminates any issues with the windows. If not than that needs to be resolved. You can troubleshoot this by shorting the window relays to see which side is the issue.

If above works, put the windows back up by pressing the roof up button., manually unlatch the front roof latch and press the roof down button, if the rear windows go down on the roof goes down then you have an issue with the latch.

See where I'm going with this, troublesome one item at a time.

Good luck and please report back.

Red,

Not to worry. The 40 amp fuse being blown is a dead giveaway for a failed component (Transient Voltage Suppressor) inside the pump motor. Cheap fix.

See "pump motor repair" in my sig. line below.

There is a good chance nothing else is wrong with the system.

Just remembered that I may be low on hydraulic fluid. I believe the hydraulic fluid when the hood is in the down position I was just at or below the bottom line. To me if anything the fluid should be at the Upper line when the hood is in the down position. I will check this afternoon and will reply to this thread in the late afternoon. I live in Florida and I live in a resort that I do not have a garage so I work later in the day when my cars are in the shade. Thank you

id like to bring my hood fluid level up to correct levels. Someone here (can't find it) has a tencheic which allows you to add hood hydraulic fluid without removing pump?
Thanks.

Filling up the tank is simple(ish). Feel the top right side. You will feel a brass hex nut. Ratchet spanners are ideal for this. Remove nut. Now you 'just' need to top it up. Most people use a large syringe and plastic tube. Suck it out of tin the push it into tank.
I used a cheap small electric pump. Cost me £10 in UK took seconds to top up tank.

Ok, filled pump tank,

Put top back down ( original position when top Melfunction )

Open hood latch manually with Alan wrench.

Try to operate top, no success. Did not even hear motor come on. Blew 40 amp fuse again

I'm going to stop for now but probably dum question, I'm going to jumper the back windows relay (via this site instructions) I'm guessing the car should be runing/ ignition on?

See Dennis07 reply above. Just for grins replace the fuse and unplug the pump. If fuse does not blow there’s your problem.

Before I go any further please refresh my memory, I don't remember seeing this stainless steel piece come up with my hood/roof latch. Please see photo and verify that this piece comes up with my watch.

Update.
Sequence 1
(Pump disabled)
All windows up position.
*pressed roof DOWN, back windows go down.
Side windows stay up.
*pressed roof up swtich side windows go down. (Back windows were still down from when I above pushed roof down, they stayed down)
40a fuse not blown.

Sequence 2
Pump disabled.
All windows up position.
*pressed roof UP switch, side windows go down, bk windows stayed up.
40a not blown.

Sequence 3
Pump ENABLED (power back to pump).
All windows up.
*pressed roof switched down.
Back windows go down, front stay up as before.
**40a fuse blown!

In conclusion I'm thinking resistor in pump motor is fried. The roof latch does not have a chance to operate correctly because pump fuse blows, fails, before hydraulic fluid reaches latch mechanism .

What are your thoughts?

Thanks everyone. Is it true I can take motor off pump without fluid lost and replace with a new motor?

Secondly I've read on site that there is a in-line plug in restor system that will solve this issue of burning out the internal restor? Dose this qizzmo work?

You have tread Dennis's info? XK8 Convertible Top, Fixing the Motor

I think you may be getting confused between the pressure control resistor and the motor resistor.
