More people need to understand this.

do you have a theory why the readiness monitors in some cars reset quickly, while other cars take much longer, or “forever”as you suggest ?

Example : my 2002 4.0 XKR will be ready for inspection just minutes after a hard reset.

ready to learn more about these fascinating machines.

not. And not correct for your XK8 either.

the ad on eBay that I used was a classic bait and switch. The text / description displayed the correct Denso part number.. what I received was the MAF shown here

I believe the Denso MAF used on the 4.0 XK8’s is also used a several Mazda models. That’s what I recall reading on this forum.

I put old MAF back in, started car and it runs smoothly at 650 rpm
MAF reading is 24%. 1.20 V
O2 Sensors. LAM. 1.25
O2 sensor current constant at 32A

hopefully the new MAF will fix these

smooth idle at 650, smooth driving for the drive cycle and all monitors went OK except oxygen sensor.

other issues
1) the emergency flasher stayed on after hitting the button, and I had to turn off the engine and turn back on to stop it, and now will not turn on
2) ac is not working, happened twice before this year, once because of a leak and once because the compressor clutch had worn
3) grinding noise from right front brakes as we pulled into our street after driving

I have had this car about 13 years and 30k miles. as soon as I fix current issues, I will get rid of it. it seems I cannot go a year without some issues
I had a 2002 Ferrari 575 during the same time and it had better reliability, just sold it prior to insurance rate increases
I'll likely go back to a Porsche

13 years of ownership and barely 2,000 miles per year on it ? These cars don’t do well with such inactivity, and for whatever the reason for that is , your displeasure with the car is the end result.

A brief visit to the vintage Porsche forums reveals that they have numerous issues that have only become more pronounced as the years roll past. My own brother lived and breathed Porsche, and I helped him keep them roadworthy for 20 years. Until a freak accident in his 911 whale tail turbo took his life.

But I wish you the best good fortune no matter where you land next in the automotive world. Like dating a supermodel, fantastic looks are usually accompanied by high maintenance. Everyone has a different pain threshold for putting up with it.

well, beside normal maintenance items like brakes, oil changes I have done the following

replaced secondary tensioners when I got it in 2012 at 78K
all coils after 10K, most misfiring
all chains and ramps at 11K, also water pump etc while I was in there
all top hydraulic lines at 13K after a leak
then new shocks all around, shock mounts and front wishbones
all after 2 years of use

engine mounts at 23k at 4 years

then at 7 year mark and 25k miles. steering rack, tank, hoses , bushes, new springs all around, front shock mounts again
then it overheated and dropped valve seat and bent valve,( that makes quite the racket ), fortunately happened in my driveway when I started it up after a trip.
It took me 2 years to get valve job done during covid, mostly waiting for a shop to open up a time slot for my head.
Also replaced radiator hoses, crossover tube, thermostat, and water pump (again)

this year the steering wheel movement cable broke, got a new cable, and needed an alignment after reinstalling steering column. I drove down to shop and then the car would idle, then stall when shop wanted to move car to stall, towed car home

fortunately I had retired at the 2 year point of ownership and had my other car to use.

also replaced top, headliner and seat covers at start of covid and now the top has cracked in three places, and the car has spent most of its time in my garage the last three years
