Hello,

I'm looking at a 2001 XK8 vin number SAJDA42CX1NA11948. Can anyone tell me if this was made after the nikasil and timing chain problem? The vehicle has 32,000 miles.

Nikasil engine production stopped on August 18, 2000 and Metal tensioners were used after August 13, 2001 about the start of the '02 model year.

Check the 'manufactured' date on the driver 'B' pillar for your car's date of production.

Check vin of engine as that is the engine production date. Car production date will vary from the engine

I actually did a carfax on the vehicle and found that the mileage on the vehicle was 84,000 not 32,000. The games people play.

Not sure about the engine number but I have an '01, vin ending in 13402. I asked my mechanic if I should be worried about the tensioners and he said no. I decided to have him check them anyway.Turned out they were cracked and ready to go. He replaced them. Glad I got it checked.

The engine vin is a date and time stamp as to when the engine was made. There's a known date when they switched tensioners. As the engine build was before the actual building time of the car, the car vin is not reliable to determine a tensioners issue (unless you are way out of the range of the switch over)
