Default The search continues.

I promise to not be too annoying with newbie questions. Best I can.
I’ve read a lot in the x100 and x150 subsections of the forum and am blown away by the details and even machining of parts that goes on.
and manuals!

Had a lead on a 2006 XKR Victory w/57k miles for 13 grand.
But the seller had zero service records, had it for four years. Painted it, “fixed the front struts” and put on new tires.
Nothing else.
From what I’ve read here, it’s an invitation to a lot of extra up front costs which makes this not a good deal.

Is there a thread for first time buyers of an x100 xkr for things that must be looked at prior to purchase?
I’m ok doing/having the work done. Just want to have a full shopping list to negotiate price.
A cheat sheet of sorts.

Things I’ve heard a lot:
Bushings (guy in FL makes better ones)
Water pump/impeller (plastic) there are metal ones.
Tensioners (plastic) also metal ones avail
Coils?
Hoses (in front I think for coolant)
Obvious stuff like rust, undercarriage…

Would love a complete x100 convertible checklist.

Thanks in advance!
Frederick
(Future owner of a 2003-2006 XKR Convertible)

I have had my 2005 XKR convertible for about 17 years now and the main big $ items I have had to address are convertible top hoses and pump, rear quarter window regulators, and the upper shock mounts/shocks. Addressing each of those was in the $1,500 to $2,000 range with an independent. Smaller niggling things include antenna motor, body-to-boot harness, coolant tank leaks, and anything made of plastic.

Thanks! Good stuff to know.
ill poke around on these items.
after watching tons of videos, i think the main thing ill have done at a shop is putting in Wayne’s bushings as soon as i buy one.
The rest seems to be do-at-home-able without a huge investment in tools I don’t have.

When you get the car of your dreams, let me know. I might be able to help with some issues.

That would be amazing.
But first I have to sit in one and see if I fit.
🤣

These cars have insanely high seating. If you're over perhaps 5' 11" you may find that you're too tall unless you like to drive around with the seat leaned way back, cholo style. I'm about 5' 10.5" and I find I have to lean over and look up to see things like overhead traffic lights, and the rear-view mirror blocks the view of traffic coming from the right. I have a friend, a couple of decades younger, about as tall as me but very husky. He has a hard time getting in and out. He said the car is "definitely not fat-friendly."

I’m 6’ 1.5” . And fit really well on a 2002 coupe.

some people are long legged, other have a long torso. So it’s difficult to generalize how a persons fit will be just based on height..

We purchased the 2006 XK8 Victory Edition convertible for my wife in early February 2012 at 36,000 miles (now at 127,500 miles). I am 6-foot-7 with size 15 feet and I do not fit. With the top up, I'm good for maybe 50 miles before my back, knees, and neck start screaming at me. With the top down, I can do 150 miles or so....

Wayne is a great resource and more importantly, a great friend. I have made the drive from Raleigh to Spencer many times to work on our various vehicles together....

I’m 6’4” 320. Frankly, one the largest humans you know. Over the years, I’ve figured out how to manipulate any seat to accommodate my size, and this car is no different. What I’ve noticed is how low it rides. Work on those deep squats, they are essential to get in and out.

I don’t plan on driving it much with the top closed

I am 6’3 and 205lbs and drive with the top up and down and have no problem driving comfortably on long trips and around town.

That's for sure - I have a VW GTI which i thought was fairly low, but this blows it away. I have one of those old man handles you can shove in the door latch and use to help stand up on those days your hips are bothering you too much.

@cjd777 I hope you are bored.
You may have a new apprentice soon.
i was a nuclear engineer in the military, so no stranger to tools. Just never touched car mechanics beyond my 68 mustang decades ago.

Jon, I’m not quite that big, 6’3 195, but with a longer torso. Think LT-XLT shirt size.
Im driving up to Mooresville Saturday to do the sit and drive for an overpriced 2004 XKR. The 32k miles is great, but almost 19k asking is insane from what I’ve seen out there.

Yep, for $19 grand it better be perfect, and frankly none of them are. Get him to knock $5 grand off and you are in the ballpark....

it is one of those sole proprietor dealerships surrounded by the major ones.
He has 4 or 5 XK/Rs 2002 to 2013. All way overpriced.

But a great opportunity to sit in, drive and experience each.
should edumacate me more in my search.
