The system never forgets previous incidents unless you clear the codes.

Code 23 was most likely set by the low refrigerant charge.

Code 14 can get set during service if the ignition gets turned on with the instrument cluster unplugged.

Steve - thanks - as much as I have read to clear codes and rescan - sometimes you need a bigger hammer to get through!! lol Appreciate the clarification on code 14 must have been stored from well before I picked her up!

By depressing the brake and gas pedals in a certain sequence you can invoke diagnosis of the retroincabulator, first designed and greatly reduced in size by Rockwell in the mid-'90s. See here for an explanation of the system:

Apparently there are "secret diagnostics" in the instrument cluster for X, S & more recent XJ types. Don't know about you XK/R types though. If you're interested, look Here

Love to see old threads that refuse to die. As noted way back in the first post with the Corvette all you needed to do was use a paperclip to short out two pins in the OBD port and you can get into a whole bunch of diagnostics on the console information panel. I suspect if you short some pins in the Jaguar module you can accomplish the same thing. Either that or it will create a tear in the space time continuum.

Interesting. If true, it would be very easy to build a plugin with a switch to do this or even possibly add a switch to short the pins to an ODBII code reader.

Honda had a similar system on their '90s Prelude and Civics. You could either plug a code-reader into a socket or short out two of its pins (yep, with a paperclip), to get the lights on the dashboard to flash if there were stored problems. The numbers of flashes (long pulses and short pulses) told you which fault it was (5 long and 4 short = code 54). Very useful and saved $50 a time at the dealership. I wired in a switch on the dashboard to do this and another to blank the EEPROMs where the messages were stored without disconnecting the battery and losing all the saved radio stations.

Those were the days.

The OBDII port on the Jag kinda takes the fun out of it. 8-)

Best wishes, Colin
