Yes, there is supposed to be a screw there. At the very least having it in place will keep some dust and dirt out of the shifter mechanism, as well as look a helluva lot better than an empty hole.
When I adjust the shift cable, I never do any adjustment or removal under the car.
Loosen the cable adjuster nuts on the cable about two turns.
Start the engine
Move the shifter to N, you should feel the trans shift out of R and the revs go up.
Adjust both nuts finger tight and make sure the lever is in the center of the shifter cut out.
Tighten the nuts.
Shift thru each gear position making sure the lever lines up in the shifter detents and you can feel the trans shift from in gear to out of gear.
Make sure the trans goes into Park when the lever is in P and comes out easily when the brake is depressed.
You can make small adjustments pretty easily.

Plastic screw??? Cool... I never known or seen one...
I lifted this photo from another topic on this forum:
Right on! Interesting. Mine are both MIA.
What I've been looking for (with no luck) is the little tab/plug that goes into the key hole for the manual top release at the top of the windshield. One car has,,, the XKR does not.
Having just lost the part which covered the "D" I contacted the fellow on ebay in Canada but as yet I haven't heard back. Meantime, I emailed a firm in Canada who apparantly carry out small runs of metal fabrications in both aluminum and stainless steel. If I hear anything back, I'll let you know.
Thanks for this information! It still looks like a "screw"!!
I ordered (2) of them from a "Yard" in England for $20.00...Just in case someone else needs to take my new one! The Jag was in the shop for a few days and I guess it was just too much for them to leave it alone!
Any updates on this topic? I still think somebody with 3D printing skills could make money with this. Virtually no other way to
get this part anymore, and even if you can find an original it will likely break too.
I also see companies that make aftermarket kevlar or kevlar look interior trim parts. My shifter surround would look great in kevlar! Better than the crumbling plastic for sure. Money to be made here!
I've got this, see pictures. I ordered it for my XK8 for the top plastic gear indicator. My car got rear ended before this part came in. Many of us know what happens after you get rear-ended, so its available.
Try https://www.solarsigna.com
they offer an aluminum overlay
WJ
this is for the xk150 but they have them for the x100 both 5 and 6 speed
Thanks that looks promising. I watched the install video on the X100 its an actual replacement for the original black piece not an overlay. My black surround is itself surrounded by a chrome trim bezel. So I would end up with chrome inside of chrome. I’ll see how it looks and report back.
Their site says these are on back order. Has anyone received anything from Solar Signa recently? Are they still active?
Hate to pay $150 up front and have to wait 6 months for it.
