Default Shifter Locked

Took it out today and parked on level, flat stall. Started and went to put in gear and the shifter was locked! Messed about for a few seconds , wiggling the shifter, applying brakes etc., then it finally shifted into reverse and away we go. Would like to be proactive and prevent this from happening again. What could cause this and how to fix if anyone knows.

Did you remove the plastic plug in the shifter bezel to access the manual shifter release ? This is covered in the owners manual.

If your brake light switch is failing it will keep the shifter from going into gear. You may "hit the brakes" but not have lights. Mine is getting flaky and it causes the brake lights to flicker sometimes, and sometimes not come on at all. Scary when someone is coming up behind you!

It operated properly before attempting manual release. Brake switch is a good lead as it worked after hitting brake pedal several times. Thank you.

The microswitches on the line switch assembly of the gear selector are either failing, or, the more likely scenario, the little roller arm on the microswitch has fallen off or is about to. Your official fix is to head on over to Mouser.com and buy the appropriate Omron microswitch.

Something like this is what you're looking for:

Your unofficial fix is to dismantle the gearshift assembly and remove the shift interlock solenoid. I did this while I was waiting for the microswitch to arrive in the mail. I installed the microswitch but never replaced the solenoid.
