Default Stainless steel brake rotors

Living in a coastal community results in rapid surface rust forming on my front brake rotors.
With 56k miles on the car I presume that the rotors are still OEM, but while the front ones rust, the rear ones do not. The front ones also dust up the wheels very quickly.
In any case, my question is about the availability/use of stainless steel rotors with ceramic pads.
Anyone with experience or comment about this mix?

I just replaced my rotors and brakes with stainless rotors on my Mercedes. They are working fine and still look shiny after a month of driving.

I've been using Akebono pads for years. Little or no brake dust and good stopping power. I'm not sure if they are fully ceramic. They say they are made from "a variety of proprietary ceramic formulations". They been in the business since 1929.

I have these in hand. I'm wondering if they work properly with stainless steel rotors.

I don't think any automotive rotors are stainless steel as its not a particularly good material for this application. Most people use coated rotors, which greatly reduces the rust on the hats and not swept region. Any surface rust that appears on the swept surface should disappear after the first brake application.

Cast iron is far superior to stainless steel for dissipating heat. Even if you can get stainless rotors I wouldn’t recommend them.

another way to go would be the very expensive ceramic rotors similar to those used in serious racing machines.

as mentioned by @Quadcammer , coated rotors are the way to go. They are coated only in the non-contact areas. The pad contact area will always be rust free after the first brake application.

FWIW I live 7.5 miles from the gulf of mexico.

When I did the brakes on my last Jaguar I chose to "upgrade" to Brembo rotors. The powder coat finish on these was best I have seen, and I had no noticeable rusting issues on the disc surfaces. The coated areas still looked great after years of use. Brembo makes replacements for many OEM standard brake setups. Brembos aren't just for the "R" performance cars.

They are available for our X351 so I intend to use this brand when I do the brakes on my 2011 XJL I am at 39K so it will be pretty soon. Also, the Centric ceramic pads (in the background) were virtually dust free.

I’ve just fitted EBC discs and red pads, don’t get any surface rust on discs compared to original BREMBO, they rust really quickly, with the pads hardly any dust on the wheels, a great improvement

ebc red stuff pads are my favorite pad for spirited street use.

love to hear how you compare their performance vs the Brembo pads after you’ve had them for a while.

All rotors are iron (unless going CCB). If you get 2 piece, the center hat is aluminum and the rotor ring is iron.

There must be some different alloys used because some rust overnight while some seem to never rust. I'm looking for the most resistant.

Default Frozen Rotor Cryogenic

I used those rotors for my XK8 VE and my XFS and I am more then satisfied. Last longer without heating and good resistance to rust. With theirs pads, the perfect match.

FWIW, for the price they are selling those Hawk pads for one can get a set of the much more desirable ebc red stuff pads .

I took part in a brake pad comparison test not too long ago. Hawks premium line fared no better than the OEM replacement pads. Only the Brembo’s tested close to the ebc line.
