steering rack leaks
I have not been able to find the gasket or gasket kit for my steering rack. It is a 1999 XK8. It is leaking where the steering column connects to the rack. A rebuilt rack costs about $1,400. A new one can cost as much as $3,000. The rebuilders are getting gaskets somewhere. But where? I think getting a used one is not such a good idea. Does anyone have a parts source?

Technically, your rack does not use a gasket but rather o-rings and lip seals. The kits are available but we source Genuine ZF seals out of Europe to rebuild our racks. I would love to be able to sell racks for $1400 but it would be hard to keep a straight face. Normal price form most of the usuals should be about 1/3 of that.

All we build and stock are long racks. We do custom work for wholesalers but most all also prefer long racks. However, just to be sure, they do not include the tie rod ends, just tie rods. I just checked and we have a full range in stock with only a few odd ball racks not in stock. At this point, we stock 40 different Jaguar steering racks with about 90% maintained in stock. Our hands are tied on the Online store as we need a software system upgrade to go live on inventory. As it is, we have approx 1000 items on the online store out of about 40,000 items stocked. The items have to be manually updated weekly. Very cumbersome and hopefully corrected this year with a new overall operating system. The best thing to do is call. If we don't have it in stock, we can build it if we have a core. If we don't have the core, we can turn yours around usually in 24 hours. A couple of cores we are short on are the X300 V12 and the 4.2 XKR racks. Thanks for the interest and let me know if I can help on anything.
