Default tail lights and front parking lights blink on/off when engines is off

I realize this could be caused by several failures but any advice would be very appreciated. Two days ago, when I turned my engine off, the tail lights and front parking lights would just stay on and did not go off when I turned the lights to off position on stalk. Yesterday and today, they are now blinking very quickly when engine is off. When I am dirving, and the lights are set to "Auto" on stalk and it is day time, they do not do it. I had my battery tested and it is showing 370 amps and by-the-way, this is the original 14 year-old battery. Also, the alternator is showing bad but I would think it is unlikely both are bad at the same time as it still starts fine and drives fine. Is this an electrical or maybe relay issue or just the bad battery. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

ericindy, hard to assess without knowing the model and year of the vehicle. Please provide this small bit of information and one of the moderators can move this to the appropriate section for better technical response as the Forum advice and Feedback section is for issues with navigating the forum itself.

Also since this is your first post, when you have a moment, please stop by the New Member section and post an intro, you will also get some pointers on navigating and setting up your profile.

no problem - I've moved it to the XK8/XKR section for greater visibility and replies. You will find a great deal of information in this section specifically the first few threads. Hope you get the issue resolved so you can get back to enjoying the drive!

I don't have any advise directly related to your problem, but please change out that old battery. It may be the cause of your current problem but even if it isn't, it WILL be the cause of a future problem. Jags do not like low voltage conditions and even when the engine is off, several systems on you car are still drawing power and a low voltage can cause any of a number of these systems to function erratically. You should have over 13 volts from the battery to the car. Less that about 12.5 volts and there are generally problems. As for your specific problem, I'm wondering if the low voltage is causing a security module problem, which is then causing the lights to flash on and off. Just a guess at this point.

Thanks for the advise. I think you are accurate regarding the low battery power causing the issue. I will change tomorrow and post the outcome.

Unfortunately, after having a new battery installed, the problem of my front parking lights and my tail lights blinking when engine is turned off is still somewhat present. This time however, they are not doing every time and when they do, sometimes I can rotate the lights setting on stalk OR SOMETIMES I can set my alarm from my remote and disengage alarm from remote several times quickly and it stops. Also, as suspected, my alt is not bad.

My question: is it possible that my volts were so low that now that it has good battery power, maybe something needs to be reset??

Any advice on this issue would be welcomed. Thanks.

There is a process where you can do a hard reset but I've never done it. If you search the forum, I'm sure you'll find the procedure. It could be that the extended low voltage conditions damaged the security module. That would be unfortunate as they cost about $1000.

Here's a thread on the hard reset procedure. The simple version is disconnect the negative battery cable and touch for about 20 seconds the positive post. Some suggest disconnecting the cable, turn the ignition to on and then touching. Turn off the ignition before reconnecting battery.

You will be surprised how many simple faults this procedure corrects.

Thanks for feedback thread link and the! Yeah, I'll try the reset and get back to the forum. I can just disconnect the security module right? Obviously I won't have alarm and I'm guessing maybe the locks might not work, but for now it should solve the problem until I get a new one. Incidentally, the lights haven't started blinking again since I parked it a few hours ago. Maybe the system reset itself?
