Angry Top speed for xkr?

OK, I have a 2005 xkr conv. with 17,000 miles. Recently I was able to test its limits on an empty streatch of highway. Instead of being able to boast a top speed of 150, that I thought it would go, I only hit 120-125 with what seemed like a govenor restricting any further speed. Anyone know if thats the norm for usa models?

Definitely not the norm. My prior 2001 XK8 managed 156mph. I've yet to find out what the 'R will do, purely for testing purposes of course...

Ive taken my 00 XKR to about 155 so that is definetly not the norm. I beleive the cars main computer controls its top speed so changing out the computer could possibly get you the desired results. Personaly I liked it better when my foot had full control of how fast I went.

Default Maybe I am just a wuss. . .

But I don't understand these occasional posts where someone is complaining that they were only able to go say 135 or 125 mph in their car and not 155 mph. Unless I went to the dragstrip or did some hobby racing, I would not care about being able to reach the theoretical max speed. I have had a few muscle cars over the years and I have to say the fastest I ever went (very briefly) was 105mph in my 1970 Roadrunner. Similarly, I have only had the Vette to 90mph maybe once or twice. I do not feel that I am missing something in my life not having gone faster.

Did you have your top down or up? I know that the drag would not make a 25mph difference, but it is possible that the car restricts the speed even more when the top is down..

I hit 168mph in my audi once and I have no desire to go that fast in a rag top again.. This was at night mind you, on a road that we pretty much close down to race on, but it was still kind of intense with nothing over your head other than a couple pieces of aluminum covered in some fabric.. I know the XKR will easily hit 155 though, the STR went 157mph according to a garmin GPS and she still had more in her.. Eric

I also had a 1970 Roadrunner...What a sweet car that was I could shoot myself for ever getting rid of that Beast. I also don't care to go much faster than 70 mph without a rollcage.Espescially in a convrt...You flip your head will go splat like a watermelon...Ouch

Hey--another Mopar guy. My 1970 was white with a back hood strip and the primo interior with bucket seats rather than bench. It looked as good the day I sold it in 1983 as the day I bought it (but basically had to almost give it away). Imagine my pain when a few weeks after I sold it the kid who bought it called sheepishly asking if I had any photos of the car. He had totalled it and needed photos to show the insurance company!! How sad, but I digress. . .

BBC has a TV program called Top Gear. They tested an XKR well over 155 mph, but it had a mod package with a mod chip or ecm flash to remove the speed limiter. Look for their web site, lots of good videos, good reviews on Jaguars, Bugattis, Astin Martin etc...

Or do a Google Video search on: BBC Top Gear XKR

They even did a segment comparing the Jaguar XKR vs V8 Vantage

Ah yes--Plum Crazy was the color I wanted. I am involved with earthquake risk and seem to have at least one job a year that takes me to the Memphis area--it's the New Madrid fault.

BTW, make sure you have tires rated for the speed you're gonna try. A blow out at 100+MPH will get your wife a condo, pool boy, and a new Jag (life insurance payout). The pool boy will have lots of fun driving the new Jag... He'll probably post questions about which wax works best, etc.
All kidding aside, I had a frield blow out his side window @ 165 MPH in his vette, he kept it under control... the seat stain is hardly noticable...

The 05 and 06 XK's came with ASL, a soft speed limiter that's configurable--are you sure that wasn't set? It's described in section 4-30 of the owner's manual.

Just a thought.

Thanks,
David

This is turning out to be a funny thread . BTW, I agree with David about ASL as I don't belive the XKR would have a governer at 125.

Re. Dave's comment about speed:
I kinda disagree with why go that fast comment. Most of the people (adults) who have bikes (me) or fast cars like XKR /Porsche etc. are responsible adults who once in a while like their inner "wolverine" to come out after they look left & right. It's the rush of adrenaline pumping, and the marvel of engineering. Obviously, you need to be cognizant of the fact that your car and tires are in good condition and your health & skill level is appropriate.

Also, things can happen really fast, even at under 100 mph. Hitting a small bump or rock can cause havoc at high speeds.

Many drivers experience difficulty getting another beer out of the cooler safely at speeds over 155. The factory limits it at 155 for safety reasons...
