Hi all,
I had an issue at the end of last year were my car lost drive after doing 70 ish mph.
No codes, no foward or reverse and was transported home.
After a short period of time the car had everything working again with no issues.
I decided to change the transimission oil and filter. The oil looked in good condition and there was no metal fragments on my magnets.
The car was all good as far as driving it, no issues.
This morning I used the whole J gate gears with no issues and was in drive when the same thing happened again.
I waited for five minutes and all good again. No smells, no burning, no jerking when going in gear.
No codes, no warning lights, hoping for someone has had the same issue as looking for clues to the failure.
Thanks all!
Can’t say I had same issue but when you changed fluid and filter you followed proper (ridiculous) procedure? And just curious, did you change anything else? I only ask cus I have 97 xk8 USA model, just did my fluid and filter, but also put in the trans go pressure regulator valve. After fluid and filter change and following procedure as best as I could, I felt a few minor hiccups in the 100 mi or so I put on and bought more fluid just to check in case I was low.
Couldn’t hurt to double check the fluid level, ya know?
There are 3 possible gearboxes fitted to the X100 depending on MY and/or engine designation.
What gearbox are you inquiring about?
ZF5HP24
W5A580
ZF6HP26
I have a 1997 XK8 which was build in 1996.
I have the ZF5HP24.
I have some codes now with better reader which are P1797 / P1798.
Looks like TCM but going to check all earths to be sure before going that route.
Thanks to all that replied on my issue with my Jaguar XK8 built in late 1996 with ZF5HP24 transmission.
I had not had a repeat after adding an earth to my transmission for a long time but might be putting this down to not using sports mode.
What I did not state previously which is clear now (after it had happened again) I only lose drive after being in sports mode and then taken out of sports mode.
It does not happen all the time I put it in sports mode.
Any ideas of the root cause of losing drive with the new information would be welcome.

I have no suggestions , sorry, but have you tried just leaving it in the “S” / Sport mode.
I’m not content with rhe performance of my 2002 XKR when not in the “S” mode. As it then starts out in 2nd gear for mileage efficiency (theoretical anyway) and shifts too soon.
Frankly, it sounds like your TCM is on the fritz. The 5HP24 has no internal computer. Everything is controlled by the TCM.
Another possibility is the selector switch at the shift lever. Maybe when you go from sport to regular it's telling the TCM you're in neutral or something. That's just a wild guess. The codes you posted earlier indicate a TCM fault or perhaps a wiring fault between trans and TCM.
The DTC list has this to say about those two codes:
Both could be caused by a CAN fault. The CAN passes through the J-Gate illumination module as Y2KJag notes, so I'd add a check of the connectors in the centre console to your list since it's an intermittent fault.
I normally just drive without sports mode, and it is very rare I use sports mode but I am one of those people that like eveything to work and test the car is tip top.
Hence how I found the issue was to do with the button.
Thanks
No check lights or limp home. As stated, just like being in neutral.
I will have some more digging in the console for damaged, loose or poor looking connections.
Thanks
