Default Trouble codes 1642 and 1797

while driving, suddenly got check engine light, limp mode, traction light, hand brake light, brake light. I cut off engine and restarted. All lights went off except the engine light. I had been playing with the ultra gauge just before this happened. I read the codes and got 1642 and 1797. Recently I had the T B rebuilt. Do you see any connections here between these two codes being together and /or the T B rebuild. Any ideas on the best steps to go from here? Thanks!

Did you force the protocol on the Ultragauge to 9141( I think). If not, it will drive you to distraction. Check the instruction manual.

+1, both those codes are CAN bus related. It might be related to the UltraGauge not being set up properly.

I had that problem with mine. It even went into limp mode.

Thanks Guys. So by using the ultra guage while driving I screwed-up the electronics of the car! I will force protocol on the ultra gauge, as suggested. Do I need to reset the car battery also, to fix the car' electronics?

It should not be necessary, but it will not hurt to do so. I wish all the problems were this easy to fix.

Hi RJ,

Just searched code 1642 and got this thread. Yes all the same things happened to me. It even failed to come out of Park after stopping. A shut off and and removing the ultra guage, then restarting cleared everything up. I'm not happy with untraguage. It is very difficult to use. Are you still using the ultraguage or have you gone to something better? If so I would like to know what it is so I can throw this thing in the trash.

Thanks

Bob

Hi.

I have a Bluetooth dongle in my OBD II port, and the Torque app on my android phone. Works flawless and no wires.

Bob, I have Steve's Realgauge, both water and oil in the XK8 now, and use the Ultragauge in the XJ6. I do occasionally use it in the 8 to check fuel trims, and have no complaints once I did the forced protocol setting.
I just finished replacing the shock mounts and shocks in the XK8 today, and added a 3/8" spacer on top of the shock mount to adjust for spring sag. Have fun with the hoses.

I had a 1638 pop up (also a CAN code). All sorts of warnings started flashing on the dash, and all instrument needles just fell to 0, but the car kept running just fine. I believe it happened because I plugged in the OBD while the car was running. As in the other posts, everything was fine after I pulled over and re-started the car.

Yes Jim, that can happen. My Autoenginuity instructions say to connect before turning ignition on.
