I can release my trunk lid via the remote and release button inside the vehicle but the button on the trunk lid itself doesn’t do anything when it’s pressed. Anything I can do simply as I don’t have workspace for complex repairs?

 

Thought it was a key turned, not a button.
Did you find the key hole between the XK on the right side of the trunk?

 

yes I know about it but I’m talking about the button in the center of the chrome strip on the trunk. It pushes in but no release.

 

Sorry Alan, did not know they changed it in 2001, thought it was 2002.

 

The wiring harness that goes from the trunk to the trunk lid, near the passenger-side hinge, flexes enough over the years of opening and closing the trunk to eventually break some of the wires. There are posts on the forum about this with some pictures of the harness.
