Default 2006 Models; Boot(trunk lid) button trouble

My boot (trunk) release button on the boot lid does not work. The key fob and interior trunk releases work fine. I susspect I need to replace the switch on the boot lid.
How do I get to it? It is behind the chrome trim cowling on the lid. I see three little slots on the cowling, but a small screw diver inserted did not lelease it.

Please tell me how to access my trunk lease?

More likely the wire that runs from the boot lid switch has a break in it, probably where it flexes at the boot hinge. A multimeter will help you track this down.

I suspect its the bunch of wires between the boot and the body of the car. If your in the UK its the big black rubber thing in the right corner.

As for accessing the actual button? I will look into that for you.

Looked and I cannot find a detailed description for you.

Basically you have a carpet covering the inside of the boot lid. Remove all the black studs holding that on. Remove carpet. You will be able to access the button etc.

However id not start there. As I said the wires go through a rubber 'pipe' type thing in the right hand corner. Id pull that cover down and off the wires. Carefully cut of any wrapping tape over the wires. Then check the wires for a break. Just make sure you have some tape handy to bind the wires together again. Remembering the wires will have to flex again when the lid goes down.

Hope that helps.

You don't mention Coupe or Convertible. This is my 2005 Coupe. See harness arrowed red at bottom right of the photo:

The black grommet in the lid can be pulled out for better access although breaks from repeated flexing are frequently in the region I've arrowed.

Thanks You Guys for the advice. My XK8, 2006, is a convertible.
My flexible conduit over the wires at the right side hinge looks great. See photo.

Of course I cannot see inside it, but am reluctant to cut into something that looks so good. Frankc, I saw your post and learned the name for the cowling I want to look behind: PLINTH.

I'd like to check the wires at either terminus: at the button in the plinth or at the release actuator. If I remove the boot lid fabric covering, will I see the wires or will they still be in the flexible conduit?

If you remove the trunk lid liner you will find a connector for the boot lid switch button. You can test at that connection.

Wanted to bring this topic back-up as my 2006 is having the same exact issue. I had already repaired a broken wire in the flexible conduit as the remote boot release stopped working last summer, but the button worked fine. Now I have the opposite condition.

So appears the button has failed and wanted to know if anyone knows what it is that has failed. Are the switch contacts just dirty, can these be cleaned? Or is replacing the switch as shown above the only fix?

Appreciate any insight into this.

Thanks again

Same here with 2005 XKR convertible. For a while button would sometimes work and sometimes not and today it seems dead. But can open the trunk using fob or button at the front dash. Is the button mechanism easy to remove and replace?

I had the same problem and I found a broken wire.

So does anyone have reasonably detail instructions on how to inspect the wires (remove the trunk lid liner?) and also how to remove the button assembly? I have a feeling my problem is the button assembly since there was a time where I would need to press it a couple of times to open the lid.

I have this rear camera install thread bookmarked which shows how to get to the boot button. The connector itself is in the bottom right of the boot lid when you have it open. As others have said its more likely your wire is broken rather than the button, but once you have access to it, you can test it easily.

Excellent write and and great photos--wish I stumbled on that earlier. So as usual with these cars the button itself is a PITA to get to and is asctually mounted to the "lid finisher" piece which would need to be removed, but by removing the liner I will at least be able to see the wires and connector from the button assembly-yes? When I get the chance I will at least look under the liner to see what is going on but I suppose no big deal since am still able to open the trunk with the inside button or my fob.
